Fr. Mtambo launches attack on activists

Justifying the enjoyment of ‘blue’ scones, Fr. Michael Mtambo had no choice but to ask for air time on state Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Tuesday to defend President Bingu wa Mutharika by attacking two human rights activists Undule Mwakasungula and Gift Trapence that the two are agents of donors to destabilize government.

Fr. Mtambo, who has sold his clerical duties to politics, said it is high time civil society organizations started respecting President Mutharika.

Satan activism

He said the two activists are the ones being led by Satan by promoting homosexuality and not Mutharika.

Mtambo: NGO's being used by Satan

Mtambo made the attacks on MBC radio on news bulletin which was repeated throughout the day. He was quoted as executive director of Clergy Initiative for Integral Development (CIDE).

“As CIDE we would like to call on the civil society organizations to respect the leadership of this government,” Mtambo said.

He said his organisation condemns the remarks made by Undule Mwakasungula and Gift Trapence contained in a media statement  that the president is led by Satan.

“ The President spoke as God fearing leader when he said Satan is responsible for the problems in the country. These two men have been doing everything possible frustrate government. They are the ones being used by the devil by promoting homosexuality,” said Mtambo.

Mtambo added that the two have been globetrotting asking donors to withhold funding to the government.

He equated the globetrotting and asking for donor withdrawal of aid to being used by the devil.

Mtambo called on the two leaders to stop malice but help build a better Malawi in the new year.

Mwakasungula and Trapence issued a statement in which they accused Mutharika of failing to take responsibility of the problems hitting the country and described him as being used by Satan.

Turncoat cleric

Fr. Mtambo, an Anglican priest of the Upper Shire Diocese was a close aide of the Vice President Joyce Banda. He led the clergy in blessing the People’s Party headquarters in Blantyre last year.

The Anglican cleric was critical of Mutharika and his government while defending the VP but in a twist of events, he is now an operative of the ruling DPP after noticing that the VP was apparently  mean with her resources.

Sources in Balaka say Mtambo is now “swimming in DPP money” and spends his evenings guzzling together with his secretary Rev Richard Padambo.
