Government optimistic in making strides towards uplifting mining sector

Ministry of mining says a lot is being done on the ground in order to attract many investors to come in and join mining sector in the country.

Minister of mining Monica Chang’anamuno made these sentiments where she said people must understand that in mining what it needs is exploration and this takes time and as this is being done there is need for more efforts on the ground so as to attract more investors therefore at the end the country will have more investors who are certified for the actual mining.

She was speaking this during a press conference on 5th April, 2024 in Lilongwe ahead of Malawi mining investment forum to be held on 23rd and 24th April, 2024 at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

“This forum will be able to provide information that investors need so that they know what we have in Malawi because we are endolered with alot of minerals and its high time investors they should know what kinds of minerals are we having in Malawi, so that they can come and explore and be able to mine these minerals.

“This investment forum is part of the ATM promotion week that His Excellence the President of the Republic of Malawi, Lazarus MacCarthy Chakwera announced a few weeks ago. We will start with Agriculture Investment Conference, the Mining Investment Forum and end with the Tourism Expo,” the minister said.

She also said Malawi host a diverse array of mineral resources such as Rare Earth Elements(REEs), graphite, uranium, gold, and gemstones, among others. Therefore these mineral resources are instrumental to industrialization as described in the Malawi 2063 vision, they are significant source of government revenues through taxes, royalties, and fees which are also essential for funding development initiatives across various sectors.

His Excellence, the President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Lazarus MacCarthy Chakwera will officially open the two day forum.

This is an inaugural international conference and expo event organized by Malawi government in partnership with the private sector and other stakeholders to promote Malawi’s mining sector.

Theme for this year’s event is “Transforming the Nation through Sustainable Mineral Extraction”.
