HRDC spits fire over Mutharika’s terror remarks
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has launched a blistering attack on President Peter Mutharika accusing him of fermenting violence ahead of the court ruling after the Malawi leader branded the organisation a terror group.
In his new year message, President Mutharika said HRDC is a political institution that is “slowly degenerating into a terrorist organisation.”
The President further said HRDC leaders enjoy creating terror among Malawians.
But HRDC Vice chair Gift Trapence has shot back at the President, saying it is unfortunate that such remarks should not come from a Head of State as a new year message and at a time Malawians are waiting for the election case court ruling.
“HRDC serves the people and his remarks are a direct attack on the citizens. He is fermenting violence. Perhaps this why the citizens openly express their dislike for the President because he visibly lacks leadership qualities. He doesn’t build. He always destroys,” said Trapence to Nyasa Times .
Trapence said to the contrary it is the Democratic Progressive Party’s cadets that have been waging on well meaning Malawians.
“The President must direct his terrorism message to his party boys. It is them who have waged all sorts of terror on Malawians including corruption and inpunity,” he said.
Trapence further said as HRDC they are not intimidated by the president’s attack and will continue fighting for the rights of Malawians to rise up against political oppression.
In his new message, President Mutharika also touched on election issues stressing that the 2019 elections were free and fair as he quoted International observers.
However, Trapence said this was another unfortunate statement from the President ahead of the court ruling.
“How could he say that. Does he live in Malawi?” he querried.
Meanwhile, HRDC says it expects more and more Malawians to rise up in 2020 to demand accountability and transparency from leaders.

Bingu also locked up a very powerful politician by the name of Kamlepo Kalua who fought Kamuzu in the 90s. That is why you see Hon Kalua is not commenting anything about the elections, he knows the implications of Fighting a head of state, he is protecting his position as an MP. Remeber also in 2004/5 the then Mayor of the City of Blantyre tried to attack Bingu because of abandoning UDF, HE ENDED UP LOOSING HIS MAYORSHIP was implicated in corruption, got convicted and served a prison term. I have never seen a more educated man so overwhelming stupid as Mutharika. He is incapable of not being stupid.
APM was right nothing at all. HRDC have always been called to a round table discussion and even guided by the court to chart the way forward on how demos would be handled without damage and violence but they resist; isn’t that terrorism? Again DPP and Seode white made their peaceful matches there was no such a thing what lesson can we learn out of that? If there are no demos there is no violence and intimidation taking place but the moment they call for demos you these things happening. Can one be wrong to conclude HRDC is the one orchestrating violences?
A simple analogy is this: in a village when uncle B calls for meeting some come out and insult the village head every time the meetings are being called. Now the villgehead pleads with uncle B asking him that please would stop these meetings bcoz every time you call for these meetings am being insulted a thing that i feel its you who is behind this. Else let sit down and find ways to deal with this problem but uncle B resist and continue insisting the village head as a scapegoat.
If no meeting in the village no insult to the village head. Who is causing insults to the village head? Likewise if there are no demos we live peacefully but once demos are in more violence and intimidation to the innocent, who is behind such violences? HRDC have always been asked to have their own marshals to deal with cadets whom they claim are those intending to tarnish their image but they are relactant, why? they know something. Because if HRDC have lost trust in police the solution is simple just have your own marshals to validate what they claim are peaceful demonstrators!

Foul language is a clear sign an author lacks constructive criticism. What has HRDC’s response to APM got to do with Chakwera? For your information, and it is common knowledge, HRDC led protests are peaceful and popular, patronised by many Malawians whose rights to elect a leader of their choice were frustrated by a greedy APM through well ochestrated rigging masterminded by no other than Church Leader Jane Ansah aided by men/women of the collar.

Google Dictionary defines terrorism as unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. The way HRDC conducted protests with the associated violence and destruction, fits this definition. The President was not wrong to notice this.

Old age is not helping this Professor at Law, surprisingly despite being a learned lawyer, Peter’s knowledge and handling of political and governance issues can be rated 0 out of 10.He goofed big time by putting in place highly compromised Commissioners of MEC who ended up mismanaging the Elections. State Presidency is not like Chieftainship so it is selfishness of the highest order to expect the majority of Malawians to clap hands for you or sit phwiiii when your compromised Jane Ansah , Namathangas,Moffat Bandas and others evidently mismanaged the elections in your favour. Don’t selfishly blame HRDC but Jane Ansah for mismanaging the elections.We all witnessed how Jane Ansah and Team feared to appear before the court process and how Chief Elections Officer and Director of Elections at MEC sweated, stammered to provide election information in Court.That tells a big story of political and Governance failure hence the anger and violence.I thought you should know this our learned law professor.
My 2020 advice is that if you are indeed still worthy a Professor at Law, look at positive political solutions like forming an inclusive Government, a Government of National Unity to defuse the political anger of the majority of Malawians created by our unprofessional Supreme Court Judge.
