ICT innovation winner to attend Commonwealth Forum in Rwanda

The Information Communication Technology Association of Malawi (ICTAM) says the best innovation winner of this year’s ICT Innovation Award expected to take place from 6-9 October will attend the Commonwealth ICT Application Forum in Rwanda in 2018.

ICTAM president Wisely Phiri disclosed this on Saturday in Blantyre during a press briefing about the 2017 ICT Innovation Award.
Phiri said the attendance of winner to the forum in Rwanda will help in strengthening collaboration with regional players in promoting innovation within the African region.

The ICTAM president said they are impressed with the hype surrounding the ICT Innovation Award event.

“Preparations are at an advanced stage and the event is receiving overwhelming response as evidenced by increase in number of registered entrants,” Phiri said.

Apart from awarding the innovators, the event will also provide programme to engage the winners on entrepreneurship skills.

“We are optimistic that this ceremony is going to give a platform for the industry to interact and brain-storm on solutions that can change the nation for better economic growth and better people’s lives through ICT base solutions.

“The programme will serve as a platform for nurturing hidden ICT talent for simplifying manual business processes and procedures. It will also allow innovators to engage in entrepreneurship skills for job creation to others,” he said.

According to Phiri, the challenge is open to every field including the media and that the winners will be awarded based on categories.
Some of the categories are agriculture, education and training, gender, youth and vulnerable groups, health care delivery, water and sanitation, environment among others.

“We have new incentives, one is for the best innovation winner of this year’s event to attend the Commonwealth ICT Application Forum.

“We are encouraging people to take part in the activity so long as they have a product of impact in the ICT industry,” he said.

Phiri, therefore, called on local corporate organisations to embrace and support the activity to realize its core objective of complementing government policies and programs.

The initiative is one way of promoting innovative ICT based endeavor in the country by encouraging and rewarding individuals’ excellence.

Information Communication Technology Association of Malawi is the voice of the ICT professionals in Malawi.

Its aim is to develop and promote the integrity and competence of the Information Technology (IT) profession in the country.
It is expected that Malawi’ Vice President will grace this year’ ICT Innovation Award.
