JB calls for review of Malawi Police condition of services
President Joyce Banda has called for immediate review of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) conditions of services to create room for more promotions and staff housing.
The President made the call on Wednesday at National Police Headquarters in Area 30, Lilongwe, where she officially launched Malawi Police Service Women Network aimed at facilitating the professional and social development of all women officers in the Service.
Banda said she was aware of how gradual promotions in the police service were and that many women officers were stuck at same post for years despite their professional capabilities to go up the ladder.
The Malawi leader disclosed that she had appealed to one of the most senior women police officers not to retire for fear that the gap of senior women officers in the service would be wider.
“I recommend that there should be a total review of conditions of services to facilitate regular promotions especially to those in very low ranks,” said President Banda amid a loud applause from thousands of police women who attended the event.
“We also need to consider building more and better houses for our police staff and on this, the Inspector General of Police assured me that a building section could be mobilized from the MPS staff,” she said.
On the established police women network, the president said the initiative was in line with her government’s agenda of seeing women rising to leadership positions and she further pledged to continue supporting women in every way she could.
The President further challenged the women to have self esteem and confidence that they could work on a par with their male counterparts.
“My advice to every one of you is that don’t work in police as a woman: work as an officer with and apply all your professional capabilities just like any other officer,” said the President.
She added that her Government would ensure that the MPS remained adequately funded so as not to have the security of people’s lives and property compromised.
Banda also donated 20 sewing machines, 100,000 day-old layers chicks for the police women’s economic empowerment and K10million for women police officers in signals section to undergo training at the Polytechnic.
The event was entirely dominated by female police officers who among other things displayed various services they carry out in the Service among them, medical, road traffic control, sports, criminal investigation and riot control.
