Joyce Banda slurs at Mutharika: ’80-years is for retirement, Malawi needs youthful leadership’

Former president Joyce Banda has said she wants the younger generation to take up leadership, taunting President Peter Mutharika that at 80-years he should be retiring like her husband former Chief Justice Richard Banda – his age mate.

Joyce Banda: Malawi should vote for alertness needed for the presidency

She was speaking on Sunday at a rally in Mzuzu before Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera, who is Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president and his running mate Saulos Chilima—who is UTM Party leader and the country’s estranged Vice-President addressed the crowds.

Mutharika, 80, is seeking a fresh mandate in the July 2 fresh presidential election and has picked 41-year-old Atupele Muluzi, son of former president Bakili Muluzi as his running mate.

Banda, who is 70, said she doesn’t even want to contest for presidency in future but is backing Chakwera.

She wondered how someone in the 80s – an octogenarian – would still be contesting for presidency and rallied his supporters to back the Chakwera presidential ticket in the July 2 election.

“My husband Ada Richard Banda has been Chief Justice in Malawi and Swaziland and is retired. He is 80 years. Now I hear someone of his age still wants to be President,” said Banda, who governed Malawi in 2012 to 2014.

She said Malawi should not be saddled with leaders who ought to be enjoying their retirement in peace and quiet.

Banda said the political top is disturbingly a greying lot.

She  has since called for clean politics, stressing that political party leaders should sell their agenda as opposed to perpetuating violence.

During the Mzuzu rally, Chakwera and Chilima said their parties—which contested in the annulled elections as rivals—will merge and blend manifestos to serve people better.

They the older you get, the wiser you become. What we have in Malawi is a complete opposite. Can’t remember even one appreciable deed by this Senior Cadet.

What I lovemost of being maawian is that we are by nature very intelligent see how madam JB articulates issues with vigour and and pomp. Surely at age 80 one cannot campaign according to madam. I will be a bit chavenistic in the sentence. Man according to culture soguga now you a woman at 70 what the hell are you doing at children’s playing field. Arent you old enough to be home nursing your sick husband instead of making noise at children’s parties. Think before you talk. Where is my jetregistration no. MAAW 1 still remember its call sign madam… Read more »

Mutharika has always wanted to retire, but his wife is so greedy – she doesn’t want him to leave now because she finds it easy to get money from multiple sources which come to Malawi as donations, a thing will never happen when they out of the State House.

This lady is well known as a CASHGATE FOUNDER and most of his young guys are in prison right now – Her second name is the JETGATE SWINDLER she sold the jet and flew away from her own country after shamefully loosing in the 2014 General Elections – she is just as useless as gabbage PP Leader – she has nothing to offer to Malawins.

Joyce you are right . We need youthful leader. Who is younger Chakwera or CILIMA? For what you have said to carry weight then Cilima should lead the alliance. Who is older CILIMA or Atupele? You know it Cilima ,(47) is older that Atupele(41) Now let me school you Peter, Chakwera, and Chilima are all old. Youngest of all to be our Leader is Atupele. You don’t go to retirement without identifying someone to take your position. That’s why Peter is positioning Atupele. You tried to position your son Kachale but you failed miseranbly Mwayamba kutuluka thukuta, Atupele atangotulukira, baasi alliance… Read more »

Peter didn’t get Atupele because he wanted someone to success him. That’s pure desperation, who else could he have made an alliance with? Peter is just using Atupele to push up his votes, don’t act as of you don’t understand politics.
