Joyfresh unveils debut album plans

Up-and-coming female rapper/singer, Joyfresh, real name Joy Nthenda, has said she will be going into the studios next month to start recording her debut album, which she revealed will be titled “Strong Woman”

The Blantyre-based artist disclosed this Wednesday, a day she released the music video “Battle Cry”, a cover song she did but originally done by US musician Angel Haze.

Saying she was doing music for fun, the 24-year-old said she was now venturing into serious music since she was now signed Myuzik Pusha Entertainment (MPE).

“I was just doing music for fun but now I have the courage to work on music as a career. People who noticed my talent made me do the ‘Battle Cry’ cover, which talks about how one can be important from nowhere and can do a lot with talent,” she said.

In an interview, Joyfresh said people should not expect the old Joyfresh because she was taking a new approach and coming up with a new touch of music.

She said because of the management deal she got with MPE as well as the new path she is taking, she had decided to cancel an album which she started working on in December.

“I’m going into mature music, entertaining and encouraging to everybody no matter the age,” she said. I’m going into the studio next month and right now I already have six songs that I have already written and ready for my next project.”

Though she did not want to commit, Joyfresh promised that by the end of July, her fans and Malawi should expect to sample the new artist in her.

Joyfresh came on the music scene in 2011, releasing a few solo singles as well as working with other flourishing artists among them fellow female rappers Judagaga, Capital Gal, Cul Diva and Kasheena. She has also done a song with Chilobwe-based duo of Pon G and Weapon.

She believes one day she will become one of the top Malawian artists.

“I never saw myself as a best artist but from people’s comments on my talent, I see myself amongst the big Malawian artists,” said Joyfresh, adding “Hard work always pays.”
