New Blantyre hip-hop duo Minor Instincts

Not so popular, but Minor Instincts might not be a new name to the new generation of hip-hop music followers in Blantyre, if not Malawi.

They are a hip-hop duo of Jhemar, real name Alex Nampuntha, and Rae, born Chikondi Chikonga, based in Blantyre’s Bangwe Township.

Jhemar and Rae teamed up in 2008 to form the Minor Instincts and went ahead to record their first tracks titled Roc MentalityWar and Bad Girl.

Bad Girl is a song which they featured one of the country’s renowned rappers, GD of the Daredevilz, their producers at that time.

The two rappers separated in 2010 as Jhemar went solo and in 2011 he recorded his first song titled Higher, which also featured GD.

After three years of break up, Jhemar and Rae reunited under Flashlight Music and they started working on their untitled debut EP last year.

Minor Instincts have already dropped two new singles off the upcoming project namely Ridin’ andNkhawa. The first song already has a music video out, which was directed and produced by Vj Ice, their manager.

“We will be filming Nkhawa video in July, but the song is currently available for download onmalawi-music.com,” Vj Ice told Nyasa Showbiz.

According to the duo’s manager, Minor Instincts will be releasing the EP soon and some of the tracks to lookout for from the project are Shut it down and Pothela Panga.

The EP is being recorded at Hyprofile Music studios in Bangwe by a producer named as Kortyz.

Apart from music, Jhemar and Rae are students at the National College of Information Technology (NaCIT) in Blantyre, popularly known as Data, where they are CIM and Business Information Technology, respectively.
