K150m missing at Accountant General – Malawi News
Malawi’s Accountant General Department has lost about K150 million and investigations are underway on the matter, it has been reported.
According to published reports, Finance Intelligence Unit (FIU) are probing the scandal.
“The Accountant General Department reported the missing of some discarded cheques that were meant for destruction/disposal by the Reserve Bank of Malawi,” ministry of Finance spokesman Nations Msowoya said as quoted by Malawi News.
He added: “In our records it shows that the missing cheques were used to withdraw money amounting to K150 million.”
Msowoya said the money missing could be more.

He said officer at the Accountant General Department or any other ministry would be interdicted when there is incriminating evidence.
“The Accountant General Department is ready to interdict officer based on substantive grounds without discrimination,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malawi News in its editorial on Saturday said the revelations are “disheartening” and erode the trust of the members of the general public.
The paper said the Accountant General Department is “not inspiring hope.”
