K27m National Bank robbery suspects arrested after shopping spree

Five suspected robbers who went on a shopping spree after robbing National Bank of Malawi at its Cross Roads branch in Lilongwe about K27 million in April this year have been arrested.

Lilongwe Police Station Officer, Senior Assistant Commissioner Casper Chalera, confirmed to Nyasa times that police arrested five out of seven robbers on Monday.

The robbers had bought a 26 seater bus, three saloon vehicles and some expensive house hold items according to Chalera.

“One of the suspects is a G4 Securicor guard Paul Garnet who was manning the premises during the time of the robbery,” he said.

Chalera added: ” The guard was promised at least K3 million if he was to assist in the robbery and we arrested him soon after the incident.”

Garnet hails from T/A Msabwe in Thyolo district while his accomplices Masautso Kalua is from T/A Tambala in Dedza, Pilirani Frazer from T/A Mazengera in Lilongwe, Lusticko Chifomboti from T/A Malili in Lilongwe and Edi M’madi from T/A Mponda in Mangochi district.

The suspects will appear before court soon to answer robbery charges.
