Kaliati sacked, Kumkuyu now Minister of Information
Malawi’s new President Joyce Banda has sacked garrulous Information Minister Patricia Kaliati from her position and replaced her with Moses Kunkuyu who was spokesman of Hope Alliance pressure group of DPP MPs.
According to official MBC Radio announcement, the appointment of Kunkuyu is with immediate effect.
Kaliati sacking comes at a time when the Malawi Law Society (MLS) called for prosecution of her and some ministers on treason charges for convening a Cabinet meeting without legal authority and plotting a ‘coup’ against Banda’s Constitutional ascendancy to power.
Kaliati, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, Jean Kalilani, Kondwani Nankhumwa, Nicholas Dausi and Henry Mussa last Friday held a press briefing in Lilongwe where they argued that President Banda cannot assume the presidency because she formed her own political party.
MLS president John Gift Makhwawa and secretary general Bright Theu said the conduct of the ministers was tantamount to “unconstitutional assumption of power, and constitute the high crime of treason on the part of such individuals.” S
“We only hope that the prosecution will rise to duty and prosecute the mentioned individuals,” Theu said.
Mwakhwawa said by operation of Section 83 (4) of the Constitution, Banda automatically became President following Mutharika’s death on April 5.
Deputy minister Catherine Gotani revealed that there was indeed a coup plot to have Mutharika’s brother, Peter, as Head of State.
