Karonga-Chitipa cultural ‘heritage’ group launched

People of Karonga and Chitipa have formed a cultural group called Karonga-Chitipa heritage which is aimed at promoting culture as well as developing the two districts.

The group also consists of some notable people such as lawyers as well as business tycoons apart from local people.

The group secretary general Wantwa Mwahimba told Nyasa Times that the development will help to develop the  two districts which do not enjoy equitable distribution of the national cake.

“You know that people of Karonga and Chitipa are one under the leadership of Paramount Chief Kyungu but we are not known by our culture as our colleagues in other districts,” said Mwahimba.

“This will also help to unite us as well as developing our districts. However, the group is not political or funded by any organization but the community themselves,” he added.

The group’s leader Alfred Mwambila vowed to eliminate some harmful cultural practices such as kupimbila (where parents identify the husband of their girl child).

He also assured the district that the group will uplift some developmental projects as well supporting learners to continue with their education.

In his remarks, Steven Simsokwe who was elected as the district coordinator for Karonga said people of the two districts should expect good fruits from the organization.

Simsokwe therefore asked the community to support the elected leaders saying “this is the only thing that will help us to be known with our identity.”

Meanwhile, the group has set days for carrying its sensitization campaign across the two districts.
