Kayuni demands K300 million from Chidzanja Nkhoma for defamation

Former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who is now Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Homeland Security, Dr Steven Kayuni, is demanding K300 million from Chatinkha Chidzanja Nkhoma as damages for defamation.

Kayuni’s lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike of Jivason and Company (J&C) has penned Chidzanja Nkhoma saying Kayuni complains that on 20th April, 2023, Chidzanja Nkoma posted defamatory stuff on her Facebook page which read, “Gululu ndi Steve Kayuni breaking the law by driving a vehicle without number plates, what example is he setting. Silly boy.”

Lawyer Kadzipatike argues that in their natural and ordinary meaning, the statement posted by Chidzanja Nkhoma on her Facebook wall means and is understood to mean that his client, Kayuni, is a criminal who breaks the law by driving a vehicle without number plates.

“Further, the statement in question ordinarily means that our client is setting a bad example and is silly. Several people commented on your post, and the screenshots of your statement were shared by, and to, several people. As such, the damage caused by your publication to the reputation of our client is immense,” reads Kadzipatike’s letter to Chidzanja Nkhoma.

Reacting to the development on social media, Chidzanja Nkhoma said she will be issuing a formal apology to Kayuni on the issue which she claims was about a mistaken identity.

“I hear my case has already qualified for as a study case on intimidation and abuse of office. Anyway some lawyers firm has already taken up the case and we have settled for a peaceful resolution. We will be issuing a formal apology to Steve or Stephen or steven Kayuni or whatever he is called.

“However, my criticism of government officials abusing the laws by driving vehicles without number plates will continue because it’s the right thing to do for any patriotic Malawian Citizen (Nzika card holder) because we need to demand accountability from elected and appointed officers,” writes Chidzanja Nkhoma.
