KUHeS alumni raise K146.6m, smashes K100m fundraising target
The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Alumni Association has raised an impressive MK146.617 million, smashing its initial MK100 million fundraising target and setting the stage for a more ambitious drive to transform the lives of financially disadvantaged students.

The milestone was achieved during the Association’s Launch Dinner and Fundraising Gala held on 1 August 2026 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), an event that was completely sold out and attracted overwhelming support from the corporate world, foundations, institutions, alumni and well-wishers.
The MK146,617,000 raised is nearly 47 percent above the original target, turning the inaugural fundraising gala into a significant early victory for the alumni body.
KUHeS Alumni Association President Pemphero Mphande said the achievement demonstrated the power of collective action in supporting students and strengthening the university.
“We are extremely grateful to every individual, alumnus, institution and organisation that believed in this vision and contributed towards making the gala a success,” Mphande said.
“Raising MK146.6 million against a target of MK100 million is a tremendous achievement. It shows what is possible when we come together around a common purpose.”
The funds are intended to support financially disadvantaged KUHeS students, helping deserving students remain in school despite financial challenges.
Mphande said the Association was particularly encouraged by the overwhelming response to the fundraising initiative.
“The event was completely sold out, and the support we received was overwhelming. This was not simply a fundraising dinner; it was a powerful statement that our alumni and partners care deeply about the future of our students and the future of KUHeS,” he said.
The Association has expressed special appreciation to First Capital Bank and Mr Hitesh Anadkat, Thomson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation, Victoria Forex Foundation, Thofu Investments, Central Medical Stores Trust, PMRA, MRA, UNC, CEDEP, Fosun Pharma, Intermed, Worldwide Pharmaceuticals, Cosmos, Maula Pharma, Good Hope Pharmacy, KUHeS Clinic, GPSL, MLW and Baylor College, as well as all individuals and alumni who contributed.
Having surpassed its first target, the Association is now setting its sights considerably higher, with plans to raise MK300 million by August 2027.
Mphande said the next target reflects the Association’s determination to turn the initial success into a sustained movement.
“Having surpassed our first target, we now turn our attention to raising MK300 million by August 2027. We are not stopping at MK146 million. This is only the beginning,” Mphande said.
But the Association’s vision extends well beyond fundraising for immediate student needs.
Its broader ambition is to establish a strong, self-sustaining alumni association capable of generating its own revenue while supporting students, KUHeS and the wider Malawian community.
The Association plans to invest in student hostels, hospitals, pharmacies and other sustainable ventures that can generate income, create employment opportunities for graduates and other Malawians, and provide long-term financial support to both students and the university.
“Our vision is bigger than simply raising money every year. We want to build a strong and self-sustaining Alumni Association that can invest in ventures such as student hostels, hospitals and pharmacies,” Mphande said.
“These investments should generate revenue, support our students and the university, and create jobs for our graduates and other Malawians. We want to build something that will continue making an impact long after us.”
Mphande also called on alumni, partners and friends of KUHeS to maintain the momentum generated by the successful gala.
“We invite all KUHeS alumni, partners and friends to continue supporting this collective effort. The success of this first fundraiser has shown us that the goodwill is there, the commitment is there, and the possibilities are enormous,” he said.
The MK146.6 million achievement therefore marks more than a successful fundraising event. For the KUHeS Alumni Association, it represents the launch of a potentially transformative alumni movement built around student support, institutional development, sustainable investment and job creation.
And with the next target already set at MK300 million, the Association is making it clear that its first major fundraising success is not the destination—it is the foundation for a much bigger vision.
