Lilongwe Mayor Bikoko keen to leave MCP
Lilongwe City Mayor Desmond Bikoko is reportedly keen to withdraw his membership from opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and be independent or align himself to the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Nyasa Times understands.

Bikoko is said to have some disagreements with members of the party and that his post on Facebook triggered outburst from the rank and file of the MCP.
In his post, Bikoko wrote: “Being part of a political party is something like being a business partner. Work at it and stay loyal to it. Do your part to make the partnership work. When you have done all you can, feel you are no longer wanted, and can no longer stomach it, leave it.”
It attracted mixed views.
And an MCP legislator Rhino Chiphiko also had his post on Facebook which he wrote: “You don’t try to pretend to be a member of MCP. You will find it tough going and then you quit. Real MCP members don’t quit.”
When Nyasa Times asked Bikoko Wednesday night to comment on assertions that he is planning to quit MCP, he declined to comment.
“No comment,” wrote Bikoko to Nyasa Times questionnaire through WhatsApp.
In the morning on Thursday, Bikoko further wrote Nyasa Times that “a lot made out of my Facebook posting” and that he is digesting it.
“I will only be able to freely clarify on Sunday afternoon after my scheduled press conference,” he told Nyasa Times.
Bikoko is MCP) councillor for Chigoneka ward and was y elected Lilongwe City Council mayor replacing the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councillor for Kawale 1 Ward Willie Chipondera.
He pledged to make sure that the council is audited for the past three financial years and to transform Lilongwe to a morden city.
“I also intend to reach out to the President and Vice-President of the Republic. I will provide that political leadership that is transformational and will do what needs to be done without looking at political colours. Lilongwe is bigger than any political party and that’s the attitude we should all adopt if we are to change this country,” he said at the time of his election.

His worship the Mayor Bikoko has on several occassions conferred to some confidants in DPP that he is joining DPP shortly and he is to announce to the Press
the problem with mcp does not care about there councillors in Lilongwe. Imagine since January we have never been invited or thanked for winning Lilongwe Mayorship. I am only MCP because in my ward, people cant vote for DPP or another party. Otherwise, I dont like MCP anymore and wish to join my Mayor.
I know bikoko very well and he fully finished his dreams of being mayor and 2019 he is going to contest on parliamentary race of Zomba central under DPP ticket .But your worship leave our party peacefully we as mcp family members ,wish you all the best
I see no news here,MCP has always being MCP.MCP is very big than this little chap.Go well “Dr” Bikoko.MCP will always be there.
It’s all about principles. Malawians like worshipping leaders or parties. That’s the reason why this country is the least developed. We can say anything about Bikoko. We can call him all the bed words in the world. MCP has a myopic thinking. Chakwera is Chakwera.. With his dictatorship tendency Malawi will have the worst leader.
where is he going to find peace? Every party has hiccups.
The problem in Africa (Malawi) in particular is 💰 hunger, before you were elected (MCP nganganga) but after kukufumbatitsani a Boma you start talking rubbish about the party or People who supported you to have that mayorship. when are we going to learn as a country to stick to what people have voted us to do in the first place?
Mwachita bwino Mayor. MCP is arrogant and always behaves like they have already won government. These are bunch of loosers happy in opposition
Let him go, who cares!
Bikoko asanamize anthu. What I know ndizakuti Bikoko akukaimila dpp ku Zomba central ndipo zakuno ku Lilongwe ataona ndi mmene competition ilili pa ground after all he is not a team worker amadziva koopsa waona kuti muno mtauni sangawine potengela kuti pa ukhansala wake palibe cholozeka wachitapo. Each and every weekend akumapita ku Zomba kukapanga underground work.
IN MCP there is real democracy kuteloko Bikoko akuthawa democracy.
Ndi we PP kuyambira kale. He has just seen an opportunity now that DPP and PP are talking.
He is a cunning and shrewd businessman koma sadzawinanso! Kamuuzeni ndithu!
Kodi nkulu ameneyu wapangapo chiyani mu Lilongwe? Ili timati dyera osati asogoleri okonda kutumukila anthu ..but selfish and egocentric leaders! In parties you stomach everything by throwing back dirt to throwers rather than quiting. You are always the last man standing.
Bwana councillor – There is nothing like being wanted in politics; you create your own space and play safe. Remain in MCP and do whatever you do to best your ability. Remain loyal to your voters and do what they asked you to do for them. Focus on that one thing you will never go wrong. But if start looking around, hearing gossips, poking your nose on tria….life will be hard! In case DPP has bought you then that’s another story!
Nkholokolo simasowa. Bikoko being a Dr doesn’t mean you’re Mr KIA (Mr Know It All). You will regret your decision. Kafikeni bwino. Anzanu ndi a Msowoya alandila Mk500 Million kugulitsa Malawi ku zigawenga. You guys you don’t have morals. Even one
Eeeeee Mr or whatever you call yourself, reach well and have a safe journey. Its about time have people who van help TURN things AROUND not JOINING THOSE HO HAVE TRIED AND FAILED. as a Lilongwe resident myself I humbly request the people of Chigoneka Ward, to receive my condolence for loosing one of their son to untimely political death. Ndangodutsapo basi.
The money is exchanging hands indeed in order to distabilize MCP. I agree MCP loyalists do not quit. Let the Mayor leave and wait if he will win again in the next election. Kajoloweka and team when is DPP returning the money it got from the city councils? You are so quiet, have you eaten a blue bun?
kkkkkkk MCP discussing issues on fB.
The truth is that you have failed Lilongwe. We thought you were the likes of Chalamanda, Alas! what a let down.
