President Peter Mutharika granted the holiday to all civil servants except for institutions that provide essential services such as hospitals, police, immigration and airports, to allow them rest and celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities with their families.

Over the past years, government has been giving civil servants at least a two-week holiday during the festive season.

A statement from Secretary to President and Cabinet , George Mkondiwa said the “extended period of festivities” does not mean declaration of public holidays in Malawi.

Government has declared December 27 on Tuesday as a public holiday since Christmas  Day falls on s Sunday and that the following Monday is another public holiday, Boxing Day.

Mkondiwa said d the President has granted the holiday “to allow civil servants ample time to celebrate the Christmas and New Year festive season with their families.”

He also said Mutharika wants to allow the civil servants  have adequate time to gtravel to and return from various destinations during the festive season “while giving them adequate time to rest.”

With the declaration it would mean that government will save millions of Kwacha as all government vehicles would be grounded and money meant for allowances saved.

Malawi government has embarked on an economic austerity measures following aid freeze by donors due to financial plunder at Capital Hill, the seat of government.

  1. THOSE WHO ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THIS HOLIDAY MUST GO AND WORK WE WILL GET THEM AFTER TWO WEEKS!! INE NDE NDIKUMVA KUKOMA. ZAN IZO AGALU OPANDA KWANU INU MUMAPITA KWANU POPEREKEZA MALIRO!!! ASIBWEENIII!!!

  2. Its only five working days holiday i.e. 22,23,28,29 and 30. 26 , 27 and 2 are already public holidays for everybody in Malawi..

  3. Anthu awa amajombajomba nthawi zambiri ndiye kuwathokozanso ndi two weeks holiday chamba kapena cocaine?

  4. Malawi is a vey unfortunate country that is led by individuals who long stopped thinking. Even a developed country like USA can not afford the luxury of its public sector going on unproductive holiday like this so what more with a country that can not even feed itself. What is the rationale for such a holiday when civil servants can hardly afford a minibus fare to Blantyre from their monthly salary. No civil servant will travel to and from their work stations because their meager December salary will have to pay fees, transport and pocket money for their children. 80% of civil servants earn less than K100,000 a month and how can such a person be given holiday to celebrate with a family. This is just an insult. The truth though is that Government wants to be on track with the IMF Extended Credit Facility by making sure that Ministries are not funded in the month of December. Nothing more. It should have been better for the government to be forthright with the reasons for the holiday.

  5. Kodi enanu mukudana ndi kupuma mulibe kolowera kapena? Mwina munadana ndi azibale anu wonse ndiye mukusowa koti mukacheze? Munthu wodana ndi kupuma amakhala wodabwitsa. Mwina mwazolowera kumwa ndi kudya kuntchito ngati ndi choncho ayi pilirani pa 2 weeks imeneyi. Wosakaonako anthu bwanji kumudzi mwayi ndi womweu. Aja mumanamiza anthu kumudzi kuti akukukanizani holiday mabwana anu apa pokha muonekera ng’amba. Nthawi zina tisamangotsutsa zilizonse chifukwa timangowonetsa uchitsiru wathu. Inu a ”Koma abale inu” mukuganiza bwanji m’mutu mwanumo kukana kukapuma?
Kodi inu a Patrick munayamba mwayivoterapo DPP? Tawasiyeni eni ake a DPP amene akumvetsera kutokota kwanu kosalekezako adzakugadabuzeninso mu 2019.

    1. “Koma abale inu” here:
I suppose it is possible for you to R&R (Rest and Relax) on an empty stomach. Impossible for most of us.
Please, give me an example of a viable country where this extended “vacation” is given as such. We live and operate in competition with the rest of the world; and we cannot expect to develop with these outlandish moves. Without thinking of tactical advantage, and the long term strategy of economic viability.
APM may talk about improving the economy, but this takes us two steps backwards. He talks about hard work and discipline and sacrifice. So, where is the consistency in his messaging?

  6. Ku Nyumba escom nsama mpereka magetsi , make sure escom gives power to residential areas or we shall not vote again for DPP

  7. Two weeks vacation instead of giving them two weeks to wind down all outstanding reports of 2016, two weeks to review performance for 2016 and to warn all non performing civil masters (because seriously speaking mabwana mubomamu ndi ma masters not civil servants) give them two weeks to report back on the abuse of fuel coupons reported by Goodall for all fuel issued in 2016. Give the Judiciary two weeks to come up with a clear roadmap on how they intend to hear and finalise the stalled cashgate cases which keeps on being postponed. Give the Police two weeks to wind up the Chasowa case which has all the accused persons walking free and eating mapwevupwevu. Give the Police two weeks to come up with a good report on the progress of investigations on the murder of the ACB official. Give ESCOM and Waterboard two weeks to solve the established blackouts and water shortages. Give the University of Malawi two weeks to solve whatever issues they are facing and open the bloody universities by the beginning of January. If only I were President that is what I would do but Alas somebody else is and two weeks holiday is what they give to run away from problems.

  8. Well done Your Excellency, Malawians cherish your leadership. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year Your Excellency.

  9. Such long vacations do not do much to reduce government expenses, as these are paid vacations. And many crooked civil service employees will find ways of abusing government vehicles, even while on vacation or they will just abuse “heavy” when they come back and nullify any meager benefit.
Long vacations like these just reduce productivity, and make us even less competitive, as a country.
There is a perception that government work is only three quarters work, compared to the private sector. Maybe it’s true. So, do these people really need such long vacations?
Also, what is the point of taking vacation only to eat “ntoliro” (when there is no food – global warming took care of that!) And to go to the homestead without any money to give to even more needy relatives? How to face them?
APM should know better than this: after all, he lived in the States where two week vacations are unheard of. This is ridiculous.
