Malawi Electoral commission has new chairperson: Exit Msosa, enter Mbendera

The Malawi Electoral Commission has a new Chairperson. He is Justice Mackson Mbendera, SC replacing Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Anastasia Msosa who contract expired in September this year.

Msosa’s last task was to supervise the twin by-elections in Mzimba Central and Mzimba South West.

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Moses Kunkuyu, confirmed to Nyasa Times appointment of the new head of the poll team.

During her speech in Mzimba byelections. Msosa  expressed concern over poor participation of women in the elections.

“Of the 10 contestants, only one was the lady. What happened to the 50-50 women presentation campaign? Political parties and stakeholders have a responsibility to create a platform where women can be encouraged to contest in elections. Should we have another by-election (God forbid)! I would like to see political parties sponsoring women to contest,” she  said.

Msosa also said Malawi’s civil society needs to do more as the country heads for the 2014 general elections.
