Newly elected MP Kachali ‘returns’ to Malawi’s ruling PP
Winner of the October 9, 2012 Mzimba Central Constituency by-elections, Independent Candidate Joseph Mabvuto Kachali has pledged to work with the governing People’s Party (PP) of President Joyce Banda.
Kachali came first (9412 votes), defeating the official PP candidate Aram Mdala Wedson Beza (8154 votes) in closely-contested polls. Ironically, Kachali ditched the ruling PP to stand as an independent candidate after he lost to Beza in the PP primaries prior to the by-elections.
During a State Function at Ngongomwa Ground in Sub Traditional Authority Chanthunya in Balaka district, Kachali pledged his “total support and loyalty” to President Joyce Banda and the governing PP.
“Your Excellency, please count on me; I am your son. The elections are over and let’s bury the past and forge ahead with the unity of purpose,” Kachali said during a presentation ceremony of relief food items by President Banda to affected families in the drought-stricken area.
During the function, Vice President Khumbo Kachali also introduced Raymond Chatima Nkhata, the PP candidate who won the Mzimba South-west seat on the same polling day.
