Malawi First Lady lauds ‘friend indeed’ China

Malawi First Lady Gertrude Mutharika on Wednesday joined the Chinese community in Malawi and Malawians in celebrations marking the Chinese New Year and ninth anniversary of the China/Malawi diplomatic relations.

In her speech the First Lady hailed the Peoples Republic of China for being a supportive friend over the years.

She said the Chinese government’s support to various sectors of the Malawi economy has brought about positive improvements in many areas including arts and culture.

The First Lady cited among others various infrastructure development projects being supported by China including the magnificent Bingu Convention Centre where the commemorations were taking place.

“China is indeed a true friend of Malawi. Just look at where we are tonight. The Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC). Look at its beauty.

“It is therefore true that China has beautified the city of Lilongwe.  China has beautified Malawi,” said Madam Mutharika.

The First Lady further said that the Chinese government is very keen to support Malawi further and urged the people of Malawi to utilise the opportunity.

“Last year I had an opportunity to meet Her Excellency Professor Peng, the First Lady of China, in Beijing. From our discussion it was very clear that the Chinese government is determined to support Malawi,” she said.

Madam Mutharika also expressed gratitude that the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust is among many non-governmental organisations that are also enjoying the fruits of the relationship between China and Malawi.

The event saw Chinese arts and dance performers sharing the stage in music, dance and art performances.

Among many dignitaries, the event was attended by the spouse to the vice President Mary Chilima, cabinet ministers, top government officials, members of the diplomatic community, Chinese nationals and ordinary Malawians.
