Malawi football star, Temwa Chawinga, makes further history in US

The fairytale run by Malawi’s women’s football star Temwa Chawinga continues in the US National Women Soccer League after scoring her 20th goal of the season for Kansas City Current’s 4-1 triumph over San Diego.

Temwa Chawinga scored vital goal

Her goal did not only contribute to her team’s rise to the second on the in the 14-team league but also made her a record for being the first player to score against every team in season in the NWSL.

Her exploits did not go unnoticed as both her club and major news outlets paid tribute to Temwa’s feat in her debut season.

CBS news report reads in part: “Just a week after setting a new NWSL record for most goals scored in a single season, Temwa Chawinga set another on Saturday. The Kansas City Current forward netted her 20th regular season goal at home against San Diego Wave FC and the 54th minute set a new precedent for scoring in NWSL.

“Chawinga is now the only player in league history to score against every active opponent in a single season.”

He team paid tribute to her achievements by posting congratulatory and affectionate messages on their social media platforms.

Reads one post on Facebook: “Only One to ever do it. 13 in 13 in one season Temwa TC6 shattering record after record in her debut season.”

“With her 20th goal of the season, Temwa TC6 Chawinga has made history again. TC6 becomes the first player in the NWSL to score on all 13 active teams in a single season.”

The victory also eliminated San Diego from playoff contention.

However, Chawinga’s feat was achieved through the help of her teammates who were looking out for her to connect a short or long pass.

KC Current have a game to wrap up the regular season with 5 points behind league leaders Orlando Pride who have Zambian ace Barbara Banda in their books.

But Orlando have a game in hand over KC Current.

Among others, Chawinga has registered longest consecutive scoring record at eight, equalled most goal scorer at 18th and broke it after scoring the 19th before the 20th.
