Malawi govt dismisses nepotism charges by CSOs with statistics to back its defence

Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Lloyd Muhara  has dismissed  accusations  by a  group of civil society organisations (CSOs) on President Peter Mutharika’s administration of favouring his Lhomwe tribe.

MtambO : CSOs will analyse the government response

The accusations were contained in the 10-point petition CSOs presented on April 27 this year after holding nationwide protests.

CSOs  expressed concerns by the “Lhomwelisation” of the public service and public appointments.

They queried that all key positions in government are being held by people from the Lhomwe Belt—where Mutharika also comes from. The trend, they pointed out, is diluting the whole essence of national meritocracy— doing things on merit.

But Capital Hill has denied the charges.

Responding to alleged concerns of nepotism by the Mutharika administration, Muhara said statistics on the ground show that positions in government are fairly distributed.

For instance, in the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal and High Court of Malawi, he said the Northern Region has 13 judges, the South has 10, Central Region has four and Eastern Region has nine.

In terms of senior servants, he said the Central Region has the most officers occupying grades A to E at 179 followed by the Southern Region with 158, Eastern Region—including Ntcheu District which in terms of administration is regarded as in the Central Region—has 144 and the North has 116.

Muhara said government also found the theme of the petition, Time to Reclaim Our Destiny, “misleading and unfortunate” as it insinuated that Malawians were being taken for granted, which was not the case.

Human Rights Defenders (HRD) chairperson Timothy Mtambo  said the CSOs will soon meet to review the response and come up with a common position.

That’s Malawi for you kkkkkk mob mentality thinking. People do not argue with facts in this forsaken sinkhole. Facts are starring you in the face apatu and you still got something low IQ to say. Dispute the facts, say that the facts are wrong and we move from there. Atumbuka want everything for themselves thats why you have Finance Directors in NGOs with PAEC certificates.

Mr Muhara, a Lhomwe, have you analysed how many people like yourself have ascended top positions simply because DPP cane to power? Have you projected how many might Lhomwes be ascending to top jobs in the next 5 to 10 years of the DPP remains in state house? That’s what we call statistics and simulations. Not your stupid arithmetic!!

Muhara is deliberately missing a point by the CSOs. The issue here is not about equal or unequal distribution of positions, but the key positions are in the hands of the Lhomwes. Statistics should be based on this argument, not otherwise.

This is what happens when one tries hard to defend the INDEFENSIBLE. S/he simply becomes irrelevant and off the point. This is a ‘Lhomwelised numbskull logic’

MR MUHARA, YOU MUST ADMIT WHEN THERE IS A MISTAKE. THIS THING OF SAYING EASTERN REGION DOES NOT EXIST. IT WAS CREATED IN ORDER TO FAVOUR THE SOUTHERN. IN AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED, WE HAVE THREE REGIONS IN THIS COUNTRY: NORTH, CENTRE AND SOUTH. CLEARLY IT IS THE CENTRAL REGION WHICH IS BEING MARGINALIZED AS COMPARED WITH THE OTHER REGIONS. IN TERMS OF POPULATION, SOUTH IS MORE POPULOUS AS COMPARED TO THE CENTRE BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS NOT MUCH. IN TERMS OF REGISTERED VOTERS IN 2014 ELECTIONS, THE DIFFERENCE WAS ABOUT 300, 000 PEOPLE. THIS MEANS THAT CENTRAL… Read more »

Malawi has three(3) regions namely Northern, Central and Southern region. We Don’t have eastern as a region. The so calls eastern region is a a DPP regional for the party.

Now, fro the statistics provided, add all figures for eastern region to the southern region’s figures.

That is what we call nepotism

Dont fool us. Malawi has three regions. Why are are you creating eastern region? to lower the numbers for the south?’Eastern Region is for politicians. For instance, what is the headquarters of eastern region? Gooooo no answer. We know Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre as Regional Head quarters. Eastern Region is for politicians and not government
