Malawi govt releases K40m for Flames trip to Benin
Malawi government has finally released a sum of K40 million to carter for the national senior soccer team’s trip to Benin to fulfill their last 2015 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying match.
The Flames are expected to leave this Friday for Kampala, Uganda where they are expected to play a friendly match before proceeding to Benin for the Afcon match.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed to the media of Wednesday that his association has received K40 million though they had planned for K50 million budget.
Meanwhile, rumours have it that Fam will be allocated only K70 million in the 2014-15 fiscal budget a development that has not pleased Fam.
“We are hearing rumours that we will be allocated K70 million again this financial year. This is a drop in the ocean considering the senior and under 20 programmes that we have,” Nyirenda is quoted in the press.
Nyasa Times understands that the senior Flames will require a sum of K250 Million to fulfill all their group stage assignments against Algeria, Ethiopia and Mali if they beat Benin.
Fam has at the meantime already used about K50 million that was provided by the official Flames sponsors Carlsberg Malawi.
