Malawi man goes to prison for 12 years after infecting a 16-year-old girl with HIV: Two men caged for sex assault

An HIV positive man Patrick Moyo,  48  who sexually assaulted a 16-year-old- girl and infecting her with the virus that causes Aids, has been jailed for 12 years.

Moyo has been defiling the girl, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the children, several times until the day she fell sick.

He was  jailed by Kasungu Magistrate’s Court.

“Medical examinations results revealed that she had been infected with HIV,” said Kasungu Police Station spokesmanHarry Namwaza.

“The girl revealed to her mother that Moyo had been sleeping with her,” Namwaza added.

In mitigation, Moyo asked for leniency but prosecution asked for stiffer punishment, arguing the sex offender’s action was inhumane.

Magistrate Daminao Banda slapped Moyi with a 12-year jail term.

Elsewhere,  Chiradzulu Magistrate Court  has  sentenced two men Mayeso Chaima 27, and Charles Chikwiri 40, for 12 and 10 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for  sexual assault.

Chiradzulu Police Officer in-Charge, Keneth Semani said Chaima defiled a 13 year old girl while Chikwiri defiled a seven year old.

Police said Chaima defiled the girl on April 26, 2017 when she was coming from a party at around 19:00. hours together with her friends.

He said Chaima was on the run from that time until the police were tipped off that he was registering for the ongoing National Identification at one of the registration centres in the area and was apprehended on August 21, 2017.

According to Manjankhosi, the other man, Chikwiri, defiled the girl at her mother’s home.

Medical report at Chiradzulu District Hospital revealed that the girls were defiled.

First Grade Magistrate, Lameck Mkwapatila lamented that Chaima has put the victim’s life at risk of pregnancy and diseases hence the need for stiff punishment to deter would be offenders.

Passing the sentence on Chikwiri, Mkwapatila said the man has caused the girl to fear men whenever she meets them.

He added that the man has also put the life of the child at risk of diseases, saying cases of this nature are common in the country hence stiff punishment is needed to deter would be offenders.

Meanwhile police have advised parents and guardians not to allow girls to move alone during odd hours and to avoid leaving children with untrustworthy persons.

Chaima hails from Robin Village while Chikwiri comes from Namathiya Village, both in the area of Traditional Authority Kadewere in the district.
