Malawi Muslim chair under fire over Peter Mutharika 'bribes'

Many Muslims across the country are calling on the resignation of Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) Chair Sheikh Idrissah Mohammad for allegedly being money hungry.

The MAM Chair has allegedly been cunningly and unrelentlessy travelling up and down in all the three regions calling on Muslims to support Peter Mutharika, the younger brother of the departed dictator Bingu wa Mutharika.

Lilongwe-based Sheikh Alide Mustapha told Nyasa Times many Muslims are concerned with the conduct of their boss who in most cases allegedly makes unanimous decisions purportedly on behalf of Muslims.

Muslim Association of Malawi chairman, Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad: Asked to resign

Over  3O MAM senior officials on August 18, 2011 were invited to a get together  where Peter Mutharika ‘donated’ K1.5 million, with each officials getting K50, 000 while Sheik Austin Ajawa, a renowned business magnet rejected the ‘donation’ and quickly drove off.

On 20 August, 2011, Senior Muslim clerks gathered at the Mangochi Islamic Bureau where they unanimously agreed to petition the MAM executive regarding the conduct of the MAM Chair. However, the Chair threatened the district committee with serious repercussions as the way of silencing them.

Ajawa was also dismissed for allegedly leaking the information to the media.

Barely days after the death of President Mutharika the ‘money hungry’ MAM  Chair now reporters to announce that he wanted to work with the new government, led by new President Joyce Banda. He recently told Radio Islam that his policy (not MAM policy) is to work with government of the day.

He announced that he has severed ties with former DPP regime but a source within the Muslim association said that the Chair wants to be a “fugitive spy machine’ for Peter”.
