Malawi Police arrest 26 university students: IG ‘sorry’ to Zodiak for tear gas
Over 25 students from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), Natural Resources College campus have spent a night at Lilongwe Police Station after they were arrested following violent protests.
Lilongwe police station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said 26 students were arrested and charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and were expected to appear in court to be formally charged.
“They were arrested because the blocked roads, set tyres on fire. We rushed there when we were told of the violent protests,” he said.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Lexen Kachama has apologised to Zodiak after a teargas and trigger happy police officer threw a teargas cannister at a Zodiak TV crew covering the protests.
Zodiak says the crew was busy filming the protests when a PMF officer surprisingly aimed a gun at the cameraman then fired the teasrgas.
No one was hurt.
However, Kachama said this was unacceptable, saying the police should know the role of the media in such situations. The incident has also been condemned by media bodies, Namisa and Media Council of Malawi.

Its not a crime committed its just a professional mistake which is always corrected by apologies. What do you want else to be done? No punishment is warranted for other mistakes and the apology from the security chief is enough. Kuzolowera milandu basi. Kukonzani milandu yanu ku MCP konko
It is not enough to condemn the police action Mr Kachama. What action are you going to take?
