Malawi Police nab murder suspect in Nsanje: Mchambalinja charged with burning Nyamatcherenga to death

Malawi Police  in Nsanje have arrested, John Dedza Mchambalinja, 23, for allegedly burning to death Fombe Nyamatcherenga, 23.

Nsanje police Criminal Investigations Officer, Assistant Superintendent John Timbenao said the victim was burnt to death Friday May 6, 2016 at around 10pm.

Timbenao said the development followed an incident in which the victim allegedly attacked the suspect with intention to steal from him but was overpowered and was caught and referred to Group Village Head Namanya.

“The suspect was advised by GVH Namanya to refer the matter to police but he suggested that the matter be resolved at village level as they were living close to each other. As they were on their way home Mchambalinja and a friend allegedly burnt the victim to death using petrol,” said the Police official.

Timbenao said a medical report from Trinity Mission health facility shows that the death was due to burns and suffocation.

Fombe Nyamatcherenga, 23, hailed from Singano village in the area of Chief Mlolo in Nsanje district while the suspect John Mchambalinja also 23 is a resident of Mchambalinja village in the same area.

In another development a young man identified as Chimwemwe Kalinda, 18, committed suicide in the same area over the weekend.

The police said it remains unclear as to why the young man who hailed from Solomon village committed suicide.
