Malawi Police sweeping exercise: 51 netted in Zomba

Police in Malawi’s eastern city of Zomba are keeping in custody 51 people suspected of planning to carry out various crimes in sweeping exercising conducted in and around the city to reduce criminal activities during the festive season.

Police public relations officer Andrew Mayawo says the swoop was conducted at Zomba market and others townships including Chinamwali, Matawale and Mpondabwino. He says the suspects who include notorious criminals will appear in court soon.

In a related development police in the eastern district of Balaka are calling upon members of the general public to assist them in fighting crime during Christmas and New Year festivities.

The call by the Station Investigations Officer for Balaka Superintendent Jonathan Mbano was made at stakeholders meeting held at Balaka Nice offices.

“During festive seasons a lot of issues happen including criminal activities and road accidents it is therefore the wish of Balaka Police to make the celebrations free from crime and road accidents. We urge members of the general public to be reporting all suspected criminals to Police,” said Mbano.

He assured people in the district that Police will intensify both vehicle and foot patrols during this festive season and advised them not leaving their houses un-attended.

Community Policing Coordinator for the district, Police Inspector Kennedy Langwani also assured the public that both uniformed and civilian Police Officers will be deployed throughout the district for the effort.

“Traffic Police officers will intensify Traffic checks in the district and all un-road worthy vehicles will be impounded,” Sid Langwani.

He asked drivers not to drink and drive saying a lot of accidents that happens during festive seasons are as a result of alcohol.
