Malawi polygamist kills spouse: Pregnant woman ‘murders’ man

Malawi Police in Chitipa are looking for a man who is suspected to have killed his senior wife after striking her with a metal bar following a fight that erupted between the two on family issues.

Northern Regional Police spokesperson, Norah Chimwala confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Blessings Msukwa and the deceased as Justa Mbotwa.

According to police, it all started when Msukwa who had two wives, quarreled with his senior wife soon after he had returned home on Wednesday evening from where he had been.

The row degenerated into a fierce physical fight which erupted in the presence of their children.

Then the suspect (Msukwa) allegedly picked a metal bar and struck his wife on the head, forcing her to collapse with blood oozing from her head.

When the co-wife Mercy Kanjinga who was in her house just 10 metres away from the scene of incident heard of the commotion in the house of her ‘wife-mate’, she immediately rushed there.

“When she arrived at the scene of the incident, she found the woman  in a pool of blood. The children revealed that their mother had been beaten by their father,” explained Chimwala.

The victim was then taken to Chitipa District Hospital where she died a day later (Thursday).

“When the hospital personnel conducted a postmortem, it was established that she had died from severe loss of blood,” said Chimwala.

Meanwhile, the suspect, whose other particulars were not provided, is on the run after fleeing his matrimonial home soon after the incident.

Both the deceased and the victim hail from Mwakono Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa District.

Murder

In a similar development, Police in the same district have arrested a 37 year old pregnant woman on suspicion that she murdered a 45 year old man.

The suspect who is currently 8 months pregnant has been identified as Mary Mtambo while the deceased has been identified as Ackson Simwaba, both from Siyombwe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwaulambia.

Police said it started when Simwaba, 45 (deceased), had gone to a beer hall close to where Mtambo (the suspect) was selling her merchandise.

“The deceased ordered a box of matches which the suspect refused to give because Simwaba did not have money to pay. The two were already in bad terms because each time they bumped into each other, the deceased allegedly always insulted the suspect,” explained Chimwala.

Annoyed by the refusal, Simwaba is reported to have been angry to the extent of swearing at the accused (Mtambo). The latter is said to have lost her cool in the process.

“In the midst of the insults, the suspect also got angry and picked a piece of wood with which she struck him on the head. After the incident, the deceased returned home where he started to bleed seriously from the mouth and nose,” reported Chimwala.

He was then taken to Chitipa District Hospital for treatment by family members.

“Unfortunately he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. When postmortem was conducted, it was confirmed that he had died due to severe loss of blood,” said Chimwala.
