Malawi rolls out Malata and Cement subsidy distribution

Malawi Government on Thursday rolled out its distribution of Decent and Affordable Housing (Cement and Malata) Subsidy Program (DAHSP) materials to beneficiaries starting with Lilongwe District.

Speaking during the Handover ceremony of the materials at Malembo School in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Khongoni, Lilongwe District Commissioner (DC) Charles Makanga requested the beneficiaries to implement the program as quickly as possible so that it benefits the remaining others in the villages.

“We need decent houses with cement and iron sheets to replace the grass thatched and muddy houses in our villages within the given period of five years,” he said.

During the period, the project will see almost 1.350 low income households in Lilongwe alone access the subsidized iron sheets and cement to improve and construct decent and durable houses at an affordable cost.

The District Commissioner therefore urged the beneficiaries to use the materials received for intended purposes.

“You should not sell the materials or steal because doing that would derail the whole purpose of the project.”

One of the primary beneficiaries of the project, Fasiyano Jeketani expressed excitement after receiving the materials to improve his house.

“I will now be a very happy man in this village after spending all my life living in a muddy and roof-thatched house,” he said.

He said it was like a dream when the Housing Development Groups (HDG) identified his name among many low income households in his village.

“This is now a dream come true. My life will change for better because I will no longer spend my resources in buying sometimes cutting grass for my house which was done every year to avoid leaking during rainy season,” he said.

Jeketani said the little he was spending for buying grass will be channeled to other activities for his house.

Malawi launched the DAHSP in December 2014 at Msampha 1, T/A Chadza in Lilongwe.

Many people who retired as long ago as 3 years ago have still not received their retirement gratuity and are not receiving any pension. It is not fair to use their money to sustain this political motivated spending,. PAY THEM THEIR GRATUITY NOW
