Malawi security agents in recruitment drive

Malawi’s state security agents have embarked on strength boosting exercise with the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) in intensive trainings.

MPS is displaying names of the trainees in its various stations across the country and has calling on the prospective recruit constables to report for the training by Wednesday, January 25th.

“Should any selected candidates fail to report for training by 25th January, 2012, their places shall be declared vacant,” reads a notice.

The selected recruit constables are being asked to bring with them their original certificates, clothing, pair of bed sheets, own cutlery and a pressing iron.

Mukhito: Malawi Police Chief

The MPS, whose vision is creating a safe and secure Malawi, conducted what they call third-level physical fitness interviews for the post of recruit constables last year.

Initially, these trainings were only being conducted at the Police Training College in Kanjedza (Limbe) but now they are also being carried out at Mtakataka in Dedza district which used to be a special drilling base for the combat Police Mobile Service (PMS), formerly called Police Mobile Force (PMF).

A senior police officer at Southern Region Police office said this was due to high demand as observed by the country’s Police Chief Peter Mukhito.

Mukhito said recently the Malawi police/people ratio was four times than the recommended 1 officer to 400 people.

The recruitment exercises have come on the heals of internal security flaws as exposed by recent fracas between the police and civilians that called the MDF to duty against their mandate.

Army recruitment

Of late the MDF who apart from sending soldiers to peace keeping missions abroad and the country’s boarders including the Chichiri Army camp, has been used in internal security matters of bringing peace and public order which is under the jurisdiction of the police.

On another hand MDF is staring its nine-day national wide recruitment interviews for regular solders on February 13.

While in the past the MDF used to carry out the recruitment exercises in every district, this year, the exercise will only take place at four centers categorized by the geographical regions.

All candidates from the seven districts of the Northern Region will gather at Mzuzu Stadium on their respective dates. Those in the Central will tussle at Lilongwe Community Centre Ground while aspirants in Eastern and Southern Regions will be at Zomba Community Centre Ground and Kamuzu Stadium respectively.

The MDF is, however, advising all prospective candidates that change of designated place for interviews will not entertain.

The Defence Force normally ferries those recruited direct to their regional battalions (1st battalion in Zomba for those recruited in the southern and eastern regions, 2nd battalion for central region and 3rd battalion for north) before taking them to the training college at the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO) in the lakeshore district of Salima.
