Mutharika leaves for Ethiopia for AU summit

Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika is expected to leave the country for Ethiopia on Friday for the 18th African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government Summit at which all African leaders except from Madagascar will participate in the proceedings of the highest continental organ.

Nyasa Timeshas also learnt that government has ordered all staff working at the Ethiopian embassy to buy a blue cloth of the ruling DPP, including those working at UN agencies and the Malawian community to gather at the Addis Abba airport and give Mutharika a welcome.

Mutharika: Off to Ethiopia

“We would like to portray to the international community that Mutharika is still loved by Malawians,” a top DPP official told Nyasa Times.

The AU summit started on Monday with the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) meeting, while the Executive Council (EC) summit opened on Thursday.

During the summit whose theme is “Boosting Intra Africa Trade”, the new US$150 million AU headquarters will be opened on Saturday and thereafter the ceremonial opening of the Heads of State and Government summit.
