Malawi songstress Wendy Harawa arrested, given bail: Updated
Malawian dance hall music artiste Wendy Harawa was on Wednesday arrested by police in the capital Lilongwe.
The artist is been accused of misappropriation of funds towards the organisation of musical performances by Zambia’s famous artist Mampi who visited the country last month.
Wendy is alleged to have gone into hiding after pocketing over K300, 000.00 which was supposed to be Mampi’s part payment.
This prompted the main organizers of Mampi’s shows Phindu promotions to pay the Zambian artist extra money.
Wendy was questioned by officers at Lingadzi Police station and later released on bail.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Kelvin Maigwa confirmed the arrest of the singer and her subsequent release on bail.
“Wendy Harawa was arrested by police before being taken to Lingadzi Police for questioning. It’s an issue to do with her bolting with Mampi’s money but she has now been released on bail,” said Maigwa.
Wendy however told Nyasa Times that the charges are unwarranted.
The singer said she did could not stoop so low and do such as thing to Mampi, who she has known for so long.
She however pushed the blame on musician Lucius Banda for refusing to pay a balance which he owed Mampi for performing at his show which took place at Mkango Lodge in Blantyre
But Lucius denied Wendy’s claims. He said he had paid all the money before Mampi’s performance at Mkango Lodge..
