Malawi U-20 earmarked for Olympic Games
Malawi Under-20 national football team has been earmarked for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after an impressive performance at the Cosafa tournament recently.
Expatriate coach Ronny van Geneugden, who accompanied the team to Kitwe in Zambia, said he was optimistic that the junior Flames would go places should they be nurtured.
Malawi national team failed to progress to the semifinals without losing having beaten Swaziland 3-2 in their opening group A game and goalless draw against Zambia and one-all draw against Uganda.
But RVG as the Belgian expatriate is fondly called said he was impressed with the performance of the youngsters.
“We played a very good tournament. We had a good result against Swaziland, a strong game against hosts Zambia and Uganda but we didn’t defend well,” Geneugden said.
He said the performance would offer them an opportunity to go for Olympic Games in 2020.
“It gives us motivation and that we must build on and prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifiers,” he said.
“They must all take the credit to be proud and we will build on for the future.”
The Olympic games involves Under-23 players with a bonus of three over-aged players allowed to be used.
Hosts Brazil inspired by Neymar won the gold medal for the first time in history during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
However, Africa is allocated three spots after the qualifiers for the Olympic Games.
