Malawi Under 20 National team on Tuesday failed to make it into the same-finals of the 2016 COSAFA Youth Championship currently underway in South Africa after losing to DR Congo 1-0 in a cross-over match played at the Moruleng Stadium.
Nathan Lusuki scored the only goal of the match when he headed in the ball in the 25th minute of the game beating goalkeeper Christopher Mikuwa.
The Junior Flames have Mikuwa to thank for serving them from further embrassment Congo who are guests at the tournament after producing a number of fine saves including two clear chances from DR Congo’s Rachindi Kuamanbu and Chadrack Lukamba attempts.
With the win, the Congolese sets up a semifinal clash with Zambia who beat Mozambique 2-0 in another cross-over encounter.
The Junior Chipolopolo progressed to the semi’s with goals from Fashion Sakala and Joseph Phiri.
The semifinal will be be played Wednesday 14th December 2016 while the final and third place matches will be played on 16th December 2016 at the Moruleng Stadium.
Defending Champions South Africa will face Angola in another semifinal match.
The Junior Flames returns home without any win at the competition.
Their best result was a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe before being whipped by Zambia 3-0 and finally losing to DR Congo 1-0.
They missed the serices of their top striker Peter Banda who has just graduated from the Under 17.
Banda got ingured a day before the kick off day of the competition.
Malawi finished second in their group which comprised of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
