Malawi VP Chilima hails Catholic self reliance spirit
Malawi Vice-President Saulos Chilima on Saturday hailed the Catholic Church’s Mponela Parish in Dowa District for constructing a multi-million kwacha church building using own materials and financial contributions.
He commended the faithful when he officially opened the modern St. Benedict The Abbot Mponela Parish which seats about 900 congregants.
Chilima advised the Christian community and the public to learn from the people of Dowa who are developing themselves without relying on help from others.
“If all Malawians had the same spirit [of helping themselves] like the people of Mponela, by now Malawi would have been a reformed nation,” said the Veep.
Chilima also hailed Paul Kulemeka for the engineering expertise rendered to the church project for free, saying Kulemeka’s contribution would go a long way in helping spread the word of God.<
In his remarks, Archbishop Tarsizius Ziyaye of Lilongwe Archdiocese asked people from the archdiocese to follow the example of the Dowa parishoners by building a big and modern cathedral.
He thanked the Vice-President for the support he personally provided to the project.
St. Benedict The Abbot Mponela Parish was founded in February 2010 and started its K100 million church project in 2012.
