Malawi’s Miss World rep ranks 64th amid selection controversy

Malawi’s Ireen Navicha finds herself sitting 64th in the latest Miss World 2026 Top 100 standings in Vietnam, but her presence at the prestigious pageant at all has left many Malawians scratching their heads — because she wasn’t even supposed to be the one representing the country.

Navicha  finished as second runner-up in the Miss Malawi pageant, meaning the current, official titleholder is actually Thandie Chisi, who holds the country’s crown as reigning Miss Malawi.

That discrepancy has fuelled growing questions over exactly how Navicha came to be the one jetting off to Vietnam to compete on the global stage, rather than Chisi — the woman who technically holds the title Navicha is now representing internationally.

Despite the swirling controversy back home, Navicha remains firmly in the competition, currently occupying position 64 in the pageant’s latest Top 100 standings as contestants continue battling for a coveted place in the later stages of the glamorous international contest.

The ranking leaves plenty of room for movement as the competition progresses, though pageant insiders are keen to stress that the Top 100 standings are separate from Miss World’s official judging results, meaning her position could shift significantly in either direction before the final.

Notably, Navicha has failed to feature in the unofficial Top 20 Sashing List — a closely watched but informal ranking compiled by pageant commentators and independent observers who track contestants’ performances throughout the competition.

The list carries no official weight and has no bearing on which contestants ultimately progress to the final rounds.

The Miss World 2026 final will be held on September 5 in Nha Trang, Vietnam, where judges will crown this year’s winner following weeks of competition among contestants from around the globe.
