Malawi’s new girl band: Nyasa Queens

The country has not seen it all yet, and when it comes to music, prepare to always be blown away, especially with Malawi’s freshest girl group known as Nyasa Queens.

They are three young ladies namely Alice Mtanga aka Candy, Shamaelah Gonkho aka Sane G and Diana Phiri aka Catalia, who are bringing in a different flavour to Malawian music.

You should know this Lilongwe-based trio from their track ‘Uisova’ which they feature probably Malawi’s fastest rapper, M-Dubs’ own Twista, Mwanache.

The song, which has brought the girls on the limelight, is taken from their upcoming mixtape titled ‘Swag Yako’ due for release in March 2014.

Other singles taken from the mixtape include ‘Kobo Gals’, ‘Undimasule’ and ‘Muli Bwanji’.

Nyasa Queens’ mixture of rap and singing brings a certain uniqueness to their style, with 20-year -old Catalia doing the singing while Candy (20) and Sane G (18) do the rapping, as they talk about one of the young world’s priceless topics ‘Love’.

The trio came together and formed the group in June this year, but before that, they were each already pursuing their music careers.

Catalia, who is currently doing a part time job in the city, started her music in 2006, while Candy, currently a journalist-student at Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ) started hers in 2009 and Sane G, a student at Lilongwe Technical College started in 2008.

“We are working hard on this and we promise our fans that we going to represent the best,” said Candy in an interview with Nyasa Times Showbiz.
