Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika re-elected for second term: Declared winner officially

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika has been declared the winner of the southern African country’s second tripartite elections held on May 21, against a backdrop of political violence  as results delayed with a court injunction and opposition claims of vote-manipulations.

Mutharika and his State vice president-elect Everton Chimulirenji

Mutharika,  a candidate for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won with just under 51 per cent of the vote. He polled 1 930m votes representing 38 percent, to 1 781m votes  representing 35.41% percent for his main rival Malawi Congress Party (MCP) torchbearer Lazarus Chakwera. On a distant third, former vice president Saulos Chilima polled 1,018,369 votes representing 20.24 percent .

Announcing  the results, MEC chairperson Jane Ansah told a  packed Comesa Hall where the national tally centre is located , said to ensure the credibility of the results, the Commission made an undertaking to give all political parties the scanned sheets from all polling stations  so that they can cross check with their monitors if there were any discrepancies.

“The purpose was that if they find an anomaly they should lodge a complaint with the Commission.

“However, we saw the tendency that political parties rushed to the media instead of approaching the Commission. This tendency does not resolve matters. As we have witnessed, it only fuels public anxiety and heightens fear and panic among the public,” said Ansah.

She said the  Commission had put in place several stages of crosschecking the results and had answers and justifications to almost each and every query out there.

Ansah declared that the presidential elections to be “free and fair” saying, the results are “true reflection of the will of Malawians.”

She said instead of parties presenting the complaints to MEC, they were being shared to the media.

In Lilongwe the opposition MCP stronghold,  many people expressed their disappointment.

“DPP must rule the country forever,” said Atwell  Mbango. “It’s pointless to have elections here.”

Chakwera has already rejected any result favouring Mutharika and his MCP accused  commission’s announcement of trying to massage polling .

Ansah declared  President Mutharika the winner and Everton Chimulireni now the State vice-president.

In the May 21 Tripartite Elections, MEC registered 6 859 570 voters. From the results presented, Ansah said 19 985 votes were declared null and void.

  1. APM are not awinner, tiwona mwaba madalitso a Chakwera ,analiponso Esau mu bible anaba madalitso ankulu wake zinthu sizinkamuyendera adakhala wothawathawa, tiwona ngati dzikoli muyendese bwino

  2. Never ever will I participate in any vote in Malawi. Citizens fail to differentiate between facts and fallacies. Lost opportunity to change the nation in this election. I am convinced Malawians are very happy with the status quo.

  3. I feel sorry for Peter Mutharika, ndikuona ngati a Malawi tikumuzunza munthuyu wakalamba. Akuchita kuonekeratu kuti mphavu alibiretu.

  4. Mmalawi is like your Child osaziwa masamu kuyesera Part Time…olo kumangobwerabe ndi 2 pa ten…Iye Zomwe amatoziwa ndi Kulemba Zimangirizo…Ndie Zitolembedwatu Pano mpaka 2024.Didn’t we Tell each Other Here kuti Osatengeka ndi Team B mugawapo Mavoti?Koma Olo titakuwa Chotani iyeyu Sangakhoze masamu…Ngouma Mutu.

  5. Jane Ansah is DPP. Did u see the color of dress she put on yesterday? Did u notice the way she stood up and rushed when she got communication that the injunction had been lifted freeing her to announce the results? Pang’onopang’ono akanagwatu. Kuopa kusanza ma million adyedwawo.

  6. I will never vote again in Malawi as long as am alive. How can someone be declared a winner with tippexed results??? How can someone be declared a winner when there are so many unresolved issues and irregularities with overwhelming evidence??

  7. Reflection:
DPP rigged and we are in for more trouble.
Now we wait to see APM and ana a dad finish their Singapore. They started building villages which are going to turn into Singapore while the rest of us remain in poverty.

    I blame the opposition.
If you had merged today Malawi would have been a good day. Greediness has robbed Malawians an opportunity to get rid of evil dpp.

    1. Just right, greed of opposition…let DPP carry the day a d you shut up with your dyela, a malawi tilipo angati mpakana kunyotsolerana timavoti ta opposition….??? Leave with and let APM rule…Congrats DPP mwatchaya ndale

  8. Great. congra. the village ppl decide who is the president, not middle class or some body else. UTM or MCP losed the game, it is very acceptable. NO QUERY. NEXT TIME!

  9. MCP has lost with the support of former president and vice president, JB and Kachale, Nkhoma and Livingstonia Synods . What more support will MCP need to win elections?

Malawians have rejected advice from their religious leaders to vote for Chakwera.

JB is the greatest loser: het party has shrunk in parliament with only 5 MPs. Worse still, her son has lost his seat to a DPP candidate for that matter.

  10. Yah I said it and now it has just happened. DPP ndi chitsulo cha njanji baba will rule you now and again. Mr Chakwera mudayesetsa komano izi simungazikwanitse izi bwererani mkachisi mukadya chakhumi bambo

  11. Not surprising that Chilima polled not too shabbily; the young Pumbwa did an incredible job on the campaign trail. But he was simply thwarted by a more effective campaign by APM and DPP, no less. Apite akasambe sopano ku nnsinje – state house kulibe, atuluke lero lero.
His staunch supporters on line (@BigMan et al) need not shed rivers of tears, rather they should be proud of their man. And hope the sun shines for them next time, if Chilima can still survive the brutality of politics in this country.
As for oChakwera, he has to resign basi, as there should be no other alternatives after two serious zibagira ku nkhongo (near fatal blows politically). And staunch blind followers of MCP, on line (@Central et al) should indeed indeed shed cathartic tears.
And, the troubles may not be over yet for oChakwera, as authorities investigate allegations that, after sensing a devastating loss at the polls, he begun to promote activities that would promote (ethnic) violence against non Chewas living in the Central Region. The supposed rationale? These people, who in the mind of oChakwera and his MCP, are “immigrants” to the Region, and are always responsible for thwarting MCP’s Presidential ambitions. So, authorities are right in wanting to investigate him – nobody should want an “inter-Hamwe” genocide in this country.Period.
Furthermore, it’s only politics, abale inu; and it should not be considered a livelihood. Those who did not succeed can simply go and do something else, like the rest of us do.
Eat your hearts out, @BigMan and @Central. Not rubbing salt into the wound here; but you should have listened to fair minded and unbiased analyses.

  12. Atibera volume 6 now shuttered ,,, thanks to God for saving us from a cruel party,,,, MCP must die in opposition

  13. Congratulations Mr. President I hope you will lead us again to the House of the LORD so that we can give thanksgiving and praises for he has answered our prayers – may his name be honored.

    1. All is well, but take it that there is no winning where justice has failed to deliver, mwanva? Mwalemba zonveka ndithu. Koma sinduona chilungamo pa zoti DPP yapambana zisankho. Or inuyo ndi mboni you know what am talking about, sichomcho?

  14. As painful as it is to say but congratulations DPP and APM. Our eyes are now on you to see if you learnt anything from the mistakes made in the past 5 years. We are keen to see how you will practice inclusive politics, how you will stamp out corruption, how you will promote transparency and integrity.

Dr Chakwera I voted for you but it’s now time to do the honourable thing and step down as you now have had two cracks on whip. It’s time for new ideas. Thank you for all you have done for Malawi as leader of opposition and for all your passion for the country, unfortunately most Malawians haven’t voted for you. I wish you all the best.

Mr Atupele Muluzi, again I call upon you sir to do the right thing. Your performance has been nothing short of a dismal display. The stats speak for themselves. Under your leadership or rather luck of it for that matter, UDF has been reduced to the history books. Please pave way for new ideas. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Mr Chihana, I hate to state the obvious but your political life is non existent. You need to realise that you are not a politician. You have been in politics only through your family name. There is a career in you but certainly it’s not in politics. Step down with immediate effect and focus on finding your real calling as an individual not as son of Chihana. All the best to you.

Dr Chilima, you have one more try to the throne. I don’t think you need to step down coz this is your first attempt. I know you have done horribly bad but take courage in the fact that you have formed a party that’s beat Aford and UDF just in 9 months of its incorporation. That’s no mean achievement, hence my provision for you to have another go in the next elections in 5 years. Here are a few things you need to draw lessons from:

    a. Don’t be flamboyant in your approach and when relating to Malawians. It’s the 21st century yes but Malawians still want to see a humble servant leader.

    b. Focus on disassociating yourself from the DPP. These results could be a blessing in disguise for you as they help to terminate your past affiliation with DPP. It was hard to consciously trust you during these elections as you were seen as having one foot in and another one out in your dealings with DPP. You were seen as an opportunist who only wanted things to change coz he was sidelined from the assertion and in bitterness you established UTM

    c. I know you realised the importance of having someone from the Lomwe tribe as your running mate as it’s the section with the most voters in Malawi but you should’ve picked a much more credible running mate. It’s so hard for Malawians to trust manganya. He only made things tougher for your campaign coz you had to focus on trying to win voters confidence whilst rebranding and reselling Manganya’s image as a serious and capable running mate. You yourself had an image to clean as your approach raised some serious integrity questions about you – now add Manganya to that mix, it just became too much of an effort. It’s like you were fighting 3 battles, one for your integrity, which only made it even harder coz of your continuous foot in the DPP government, second was trying to transform and rebrand Manganya and third was to focus on winning the elections. Disentangle yourself from all these shortfalls

    d. Get rid of all the people that surrounded you from the DPP fallout. Malawians don’t affirm the character of most of them. Kaliati, Callista, e.t.c. Get rid of them all.

I wish you all the best as you take time to regroup and refocus.

My fellow Malawians, we need to hold this DPP government more accountable.

    1. I agree with most of the assertions here. Including the part that we have to hold the continuing APM government accountable; more accountable than before.
Politicians, especially those on top wrung, must be held to account; based on what they promised and what they are capable of accomplishing. No rest for them; they have to walk the talk, and work ambitiously for the country.
Don’t just fight corruption, but be seen fighting corruption, effectively and incessantly!
Also work for all Malawians, regardless of tribal affiliations or whether they voted or did not vote for you.
No Regional favors either. Off course, the choice for Cabinet will always be the President’s prerogative. But still the President knows it is not only possible, but wise, to have variety, including that of gender. Notwithstanding NDP supporters expect to be rewarded: that is nothing shameful – that is how politics works EVERYWHERE in the WORLD.
We all know, though, that the President must have some of the sharpest minds in the caucus: to wit the Gondwes, Chapondas, Mwanamvekhas …
At the end of the day, the people in charge have indeed to take charge, and achieve the objectives.
And, five years from now, Malawi will be a different place, indeed.

Koma Chilima asabwerenso, unless he sheds his arrogance, entitlement, disrespect for other competitors, and most important, his maximum ego, and extreme narcissism. In other ways, do not come back until he has grown up, politically, and can advance ideas not hatched at drinking parties.

      1. Thank you.
To be honest, it really hurts. The long awaited hope has once again vanished. One the things that’s making me really angry is how the opposition has managed this whole process. If they are serious about changing things in Malawi for the better of Malawians, they would’ve come together and collaborate on bringing about the needed change. They would’ve clocked over 60 percent of the results. They couldn’t work together coz their greed is rooted in them. They don’t want change for the betterment of Malawians. They only want change if it means it’s them that will be in power.. and now they are joining up screaming “abela! abela!” Too little too late. The time to stand together with one voice was during the campaign. Misery seeks company.

        Sad.

  15. Two issues to consider in future elections: (1) many people don’t register to vote-should voting be mandatory? (2) We need the 50%+1. At present, only 9 countries in Africa (54), including Malawi, have “First-past-the-post” (FPTP) electoral system. We can cry all we want but it won’t change a thing.

  16. Me, i’m just waiting for the ESCOM loadshedding and Chimulilenje whatever his name is first International Trip or his first english speech KKKKKKKK

    1. That’s why we needed the 50% plus. Shame to the previous corrupt and dull parliamentarians for blocking it. SHAME.

  17. Hate him or Love him!I was right he got 200% his 2nd term. All crooks out to hell..musawuka chaka chino anyani inu.Ndikuti anyani chifukwa mumafuna kuyambisa nkhondo.Ndigenda pumbwa ungaphe pumbwa iwe!?kkkkk.Nonse ndi JB wanuyo go and hung!….to APM ;’there’s no question uR the rightful winner!omwe samawona or kuziwa they R super blinded people with chronic ignorance.Malawi has decided.Let me enjoy and drink champagne.aDad woyeeeee!

  18. God help us! Here we go again with APM at the helm. We must keep a very close watch to see that he keeps all his pre-election promises. Let us not forget that he said he would develop Malawi like Singapore and Germany. He’d better get busy because five years will quickly pass. We are keeping a close eye on you, Professor.

      1. Let Mr. Mandado there get excited for Singapore hey dont deprive him he voted for it KKK but in the meantime while Signgapore is under construction he will be enjoying blackouts part two!

      1. Congratulations
        Wish for more development projects
You did well in all regions in the last five years let’s hope you will do better
        Long live APM
I pray for unity in Malawi
