Mangani beats Chinakanaka to win Nankhumwa’s trophy in Mulanje Central
Malawi’s evergreen district, Mulanje was temporarily turned into green on Saturday December 4, 2016 as Mangani FC were officially crowned 2016 Kondwani Nankhumwa Champions after beating Chinakanaka 3-1 in an entertaining encounter at Chisitu Ground.
Present during the finals were notable faces in our sports like Nyasa Big Bullets left back Yamikani Fodya, former Malawi Queens legends Mary Waya and Peace Kaluwa.
In Netball, Happy Queens clipped Mangani Sisters 11-3.
In his remarks, Nankhumwa , who is member of parliament for the area and also ministers of laocal government and rural development, assured people from his constituency of his commitment is sponsoring the two cups, and stressed he will hike the trophies next year.
“Iam so delighted with all the teams that took part in the competition, and more specifically those that made it into the finals. We have seen talent here and l urge you to dream big by ending up playing in Super League teams,” said Nankhumwa.
“It is my ambition to see youths from this constituency playing for big football and netball teams. I have no doubt that some of you will progress through and l will be more than happy to see names from this area featured for Be Forward Wanderers or Nyasa Big Bullets,” he said.
He also said besides nurturing the youth talent, the trophies were launched with an aim to keep the young ones away from dangerous behaviors’ .
Bullets defender Yamikani Fodya described the final match as entertaining and competitive.
“We must salute Hon Nankhumwa for sponsoring this trophy in this area. Everywhere in the world you scout players from such leagues and l spotted two to three players who can even play in the Super League,” said Fodya, popularly known as a ‘Headmaster’.
Fodya also encouraged the youths to work hard during training if they want to make their names in football circles.
“Always listen to your coach, and make sure that your first to arrive at the ground during training. Some of us also played for smaller teams in our villages before being spotted by Bullets,” he said.
In her turn, former Malawi Queens’s player, Peace Kaluwa hailed Nankhumwa for taking a leading role in uplifting netball in his area with the introduction of a netball trophy.
Instead, Kaluwa urged girls to utilize the Kondwani Nankhumwa Netball Cup in uplifting their game.
“I have already spotted some players, who can play in big teams. I must promise that next year l will come to take some players for Tigresses,” said Kaluwa.
For scooping position one, Mangani FC went home with K350, 000, while losing finalists which is Chinakanaka FC received K250, 000. Nkhonya FC were given K200, 000 for scooping third position, while Chisitu got K100, 000.
In Netball, Happy Queens went home with K250, 000, while second placed team which is Mangani got K200, 000. K150, 000 went to Gulumba Fomo, while fourth team which is All for One received K100, 000.
