Mary Nangwale: First woman Malawi Police IG dead
The first woman to be appointed Inspector-General of Malawi Police, Mary Nangwale, has died after a long illness.
Family members have confirmed the death.
Nangwale , who was in her early 70s, died in the dawn of Sunday at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre.
Mourning is taking place at her sister’s place Mrs Chirwa in Kanjeda, Blantyre.
Inspector General of Police, Lexten Kachama said he was “so sorry” former police chief “has gone”.
Another former Insctor General of Police, now Director of State Residence Peter Mukhito said he was “deeply saddened” by the news.
Nangwale was rejected by Parliament to become first Inspector General of Police when late president Bingu wa Mutharika appointed her.
She was then posted to Malawi High Commission in London where she was working as first secretary (political affairs) .
But she was recalled in 2012.

For clarification: When does one get appointed: on nomination by the appointing authority or on confirmation by the Parliamentary Committee? Can it be said that Malawi has ever had a woman in the post of IG of the MPS?
