MCP lawmaker Mwalwanda dies of coronavirus amid spike in cases

Malawi Congress Party ( MCP) Member of Parliament for Karonga Central constituency Dr Cornelius Mwalwanda has died after he publicly announced he tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus.

Mwalwanda: Dies

According to a memo sent to members of Parliament and staff, Mwalwanda passed on at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Leader of the House who is also Minister of Homeland Security and MCP Director of Youth, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has confirmed that Mwalwanda was “hospitalised and suddenly died.”

Recently, the late Mwalwanda posted on his facebook page that he had tested positive of Coronavirus amid a sharp rise in the number of virus cases in the country.

Mwalwanda’s political rival Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo who is likely going to replace him in a by election said “my thoughts and condolences are with the family at this difficult and distressing time.”

The sharp rise in the number of cases has been attributed to the June 23 court-sanctioned presidential election re-run where thousands of Malawians ignored health measures and social distancing rules to attend political rallies.

Experts also blame people, who returned from foreign countries mainly from South Africa responsible for the spike in pandemic cases. As of July 12, more than 1,900 people arrived in the country form, South Africa.

MCP must set its priorities right. While as the whole world is concerned with the rapid rise of Covid19 cases and death but MCP has put first arresting of suspected DPP looters of govt coffers. Cases have risen from 1,146 to 2712 an increase of 1,566 translating 78 cases a day. 2. Deaths have risen from 13 to 51 an increase of… Read more »

Were people not dying before COVID19? 2 people dying from COVID on average each day: But how many people are dying each day from road accidents, malaria, AIDS, etc? Cadets thought COVID would save them from accountability when they were in power; now out of power they still think COVID will save them? Covid is deadly and we need to take proper precautions but it is wrong for anyone to think that everything should stop because of Covid…life goes on. A few will die but many more will survive

@Nyekhwemania think in 3d or stereo system. The whole world is at standstill not because covid19 is killing multitudes, no, but because it is disturbing the normal health service provision. Covid19 is killing a lot of people without them being infected by it. Rich, senior govt officials and health workers friends and relatives seriously sick from covid19 are congesting the ICUs leaving out ordinary people suffering from those diseases you are claiming to be big killers not able to use ICU services. After all tell me which disease in your or your grandparents living memory ever necessitated grounding of 70%… Read more »

I felt sad when many people; especially politicians were saying that there was no COVID 19 just few months past. We have lost valuable time in which we could have sensitized the masses on how to prevent this pandemic.

Yes we waisted time but can you imagine how many people would have died of curable diseases if we had allowed useless Peter to continue running the affairs of this country. The guidelines are very clear. Just follow them and live. Forget about Peter. It’s game over for him

Will Menefumbo stand in the by-election as Aford, UDF, DPP, UTM or MCP? Except for MCP which he has cursed in parliament even labelling JZU Tembo as a killer, Mwenefumbo at one time or other identified himself with Aford, UDF, DPP and UTM.
By the way was Mwalwanda bewitched with strong curse and killed? If so by who?

Why not, because of the man’s record
Mwenifumbo = Aford but challenge Chakufwa
Mwenifumbo = UDF Bakili Muluzi’s stooge
Mwenefumbo = DPP
Mwenifumbo = Aford but Joyce’s stooge
Mwenifumbo = Aford but oppose Enoch then stand as UDF VP candidate
Mwenifumbo = Aford but UDF VP candidate
Mwenifumbo = Aford but campgain ffor UTM / Tonse
Is there no shame in politics yathu

It’s sad may his soul Rest In Peace = But to say the fact as Malawi we could have avoided such deaths if we could have jointly accepted the presence of this disease in the first place. The arrogancy of some leaders is going to cost this nation so many lives but it will be good if this Coronavirus creeps into the homes of such unfaithful leaders.

Honestly speaking, Dr Mwalwanda had other underlying health issues. He has been unwell for some time and due to poor health condition, he could not make it with this corona. What kills is the underlying health condition eg sugar etc
