On 31st May 2014, Professor Peter Mutharika, then 75, took an oath of the presidency, pledging to defend the laws of this great Republic which represents the will of the people.
However, as evidence of loot of public resources under his six-year-watch continues to unravel, the nation is gripped with shock and awe wondering if, indeed, this Mutharika turned up for the job he swore to defend.
There is hardly a single parastatal that, under his watch, hasn’t been milked.
We have, evidently, read of billions, not millions, that have been successfully milked from MERA, MACRA, ESCOM, Water Boards, MRA, MBC, District Councils, COVID-19, Immigration Department, Police, Central Hospitals—just everywhere and, let’s face it, it’s shocking and sad.
Equally depressing and stressing is the fact that all these heinous operations appear to have been well coordinated from some forces in the State House, yes, where the president operates from.
How does one explain a case where the head of security for the President, yes a mere bodyguard, owning five-star lodges, fleet of expensive vehicles, numerous mansions and several properties? He is super rich.
Or how does a Head of State, using his tax free status, import more than 100 vehicles tax free and, oh Jesus, import over 2 million bags of cement without paying tax?
Or how do you explain the strange fuel allowances at ESCOM where, tens of thousands of people not working at the institution, collecting fuel—and some, even getting 500 liters of petrol in a day?
The asinine of it all is that, as plunder of state resources deepened under Mutharika’s watch, Malawi slipped even further not into poverty but destitution with millions going hungry as social sectors run dry and devastated.
There is absolutely no one who can narrate a story that would spin Mutharika into a worthwhile leader we had. Malawians are broken. They can’t digest the large pizza of betrayal served before them by this Mutharika.
That is why, in the spirit of national healing, Mutharika need to man up and speak forgiveness and reconciliation to the nation.
He needs to address the nation and apologise for breaking the oath of presidency he took to defend the laws of this great republic.
If he doesn’t do that, the current government should show no mercy: They must investigate and prosecute him.
In fact, if Mutharika still wanted to be president by today; it means he still would have power to withstand trial before our courts of justice.

Mutharika can perfectly be described as the baddest president Malawi has ever had although it is claimed that he is a professor. Probably he is a professors of failure for we know nowhere where the guy has performed well. This man has brought Malawi many many steps backward in development and for this, he does not deserve presidential pension and benefits. He should get lost forthwith.

The old toothless man was sleeping too much on the job. What he knew was rigging elections to keep in power so he can’t continue looting with his bodyguards. That is why people close to the ‘head of state’ upon realizing that they could do anything they wished to, went on a looting spree because a brain–dead person has no sense or feel of what is going on around them. Hence, people like Chisale and Getrude and many others went beserk in their ‘how to loot’ competition! They looted in full view of a ‘brain-dead’ head of state! And Roza Mbilizi did not want to be outsmarted! And so did Jane Ansah and the list goes on. Eventually INTERPOL should be contacted to assist should it transpire that Jane Ansah also has some white collar criminal cases to answer in Malawi. The U.K. is not on planet Mars. This is a well written article. I agree with the way the writer has put it that no-one can narrate a story that can spin Mutharika into a worthwhile president. The man is worse. Period. A whole president presiding over this much plunder under his watch, is neglect of duty and needs to be punished. Mutharika needs to be prosecuted and incarcerated for the rest of his living days.
For that reason I do not agree with the writer’s suggestion that Mutharika simply has to address the nation and seek forgiveness. The crimes are too huge for him to just be forgiven. Speak, he must, but forgiveness should definitely NOT be part of the deal. Apart from neglect of his duties, his name is being implicated in shady deals and he must have known that all this was taking place. The fact that he claims to be a lawyer, he should have known better! Mutharika needs to be punished.

I personally don’t think that there should be any clemency for APM, all I can say is that let us leave the law enforcement agencies alone to do their work and find out what part APM played in the looting.
If we find out at the end of the investigation that indeed APM was involved in the looting then he will have to face the law in the same way as everyone else…..that is how you deal with high level corruption and that is why we see countries like South Korea doing well in a very short period of their history.
As we speak, in South Korea they have both a father and a daughter in jail, both of whom were presidents of that country at some point. They were jailed for life for being involved in corruption…….this is exactly what we need in Malawi to stop corruption once and for all.
Malawians should not forget that we have lost countless lives in our hospitals due to lack of medicine while DPP politicians and potentially including APM were busy enriching themselves, this is murder and not just corruption……so if APM gets arrested for corruption and some people starts going on the streets to protest then those people should be taken as accomplices and be treated as such.

A public apology won’t be enough. He must account for the loot, as it is very likely he was the primary beneficiary. For once, Malawi should seriously deal with corruption. Malawi has sufficient jail space, even for an ex-president, like APM.
