MCP MP Edwin Banda dares Tembo on presidency

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota Central constituency Edwin Banda has expressed interest to contest in the 2014 presidential race.

Asked on whether his dream was achievable in the face of other veteran members of his party’s political interest, the MP had this to say:

“Being a Malawian citizen and a lawyer, I aspire to be a president and I don’t want somebody to block me from achieving my ambition. How to effect that is another issue but it’s my right to aspire for presidency and I will be happy to effect it in order to cherish my desire,” he said.

Banda said he qualifies to be a president and currently has at least K2million which he can use for starting a campaign to achieve his desire.

“I have not currently started campaign but once I start, I will shake the ground. Whether I will compete during the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) convention depends on circumstances and what happens between now and 2014,” he said.

The parliamentarian said he has good ideas but never shared them with the previous governments because they were not listening.

He added that he is yet to make a judgment on the current government.

“Since taking over from the previous government, there is nothing to accuse the current government on and at the same time there is nothing to commend. I don’t subscribe to the idea that the current government should be given time to effect their plans. I think we should just allow the current government to rule and not giving them time,” he said.

Banda took over from Clement Stambuli as MP for Nkhotakota Central in 2009 under MCP ticket.
