MCP, UTM uncover DPP rigging scheme for Malawi fresh elections

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party youth have said the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) intends to rig the forthcoming fresh presidential elections and that they have uncovered evidence on their allegations.

MCP information technology expert Daud Suleman , who was MCP key witness in the presidential election case, said at a news conference in Lilongwe on Tuesday  reading a letter addressed to President Peter Mutharika .

Rigging tactics

Daudi said the opposition is aware of the “rigging schemes and tactics” that DPP has to secure a fraud re-election of President Peter Mutharika in the fresh elections.

He said DPP want to subvert the will of the people to democratically elect a leader they want in a free and fair electoral process.

“We know that the DPP, while abusing state machinery, is working so hard to rig the forthcoming elections that are set to take place following the Constitutional Court decision to annul previous elections through a pronouncement that was made on 3rd February 2020,”  said Daudi reading the letter.

He said DPP officials in the districts of Mwanza, Mulanje and Phalombe including surrounding areas in the southern region, are ferrying underage children, as young as 10 years old, to National Registration Bureau centres, whey they are forced to lie about their ages and register as people who are above 18 years of age.

Daudi said the aim is that the children should obtain national IDs that will allow them to register with Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) as valid voters and illegally participate in the fresh elections.

He also claimed that the opposition has gathered information from State House that government is forcing telecommunication companies in the country to give them access to spy on people’s calls.

Daudi said through Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), government has forced mobile network operators to engage and provide Virtual Private Networks (VPN) at State House.

“While the service providers are at liberty to provide network links to any customer, your [President’s] request did not follow the laid process and procedure with the service providers. They were bent on forcing and short-cutting protocol,” said Daudi.

He said the purpose of the VPN is to intercept data transmission going into MEC networks especially results coming from districts tally centres into the national tally centre.

“It is these very same links that have opened access to the mobile phones of the Malawi population as well as putting MEC infrastructure at a capture state,” he said.

The MCP technology expert said government rigging agents are just waiting to pounce on the vote data and massage it to President Mutharika’s advantage.

MCP also said it knows that DPP hired foreign nationals from Israel who expertise is on espionage and counter intelligence to help rig the elections by intercepting communication channels and devising infrastructure that would tap into MEC servers during elections.

“It is deplorable that a leadership would do all it can, including turning against its people in order to cling to power,” said Daud.

But in an interview with Nyasa Times, Minister of Information, Civic Education and Communications Technology Mark Botomani, who is also government spokesperson, dismissed the opposition claims as utterly false.

Commentators have warned that any plans to subvert the will of the electorate in the fresh election constitute a very dangerous game bearing in mind the polls will consume K34 billion in addition to K44 billion spent on last year’s tripartite elections.

The electoral body is being called to be transparent in handling of all processes to do with the July poll, including handling of security matters to restore public trust.

  2. Take note that what DPP is doing to those kids is killing their future or blocking them of their opportunities. By the time those kids will meet life time opportunities, they will be over aged already to the point that they will not be accepted to be given those opportunities eg scholarships, football or netball structures, jobs, even volunteering age is paramount. You cant admit a std 5 student to undergo a military training, by age he might be very young but by National ID he will be 30 years old, why? DPP spoiled their chances. This is food for thought for those in the Southern Region, dont say you were not warned. Ukuku ndikupusa of the highest order.

  3. Daudi Please do a better presentation than this. We have looked at this MEC system as well and we know that the best way to hack it is to post data while masquerading as a valid tally station. This is why you saw tally stations hoping locations in your database analyses. For the Israeli consultants this would be child’s play. The vpn is to be used to provide passage for rogue tally stations into the MEC backend.

  10. I listened to the load of rubbish by Suleman and it’s unfortunate people still trust this certified crook. For starters I should state that non of his load of garbage that he presented in court was used in determining the court verdict. Suleman is far and ignorant of ICT but shines out because he was speaking to computer illiterates. Now because MCP has sniffed defeat therefore they are coming up with such stupid and baseless allegations. It’s like in football where a rival team alleges about juju even before a match is played so that they have excuse for their loss. Stop this madman and take him to mental hospital before it’s too late.

This information is likely to make people angry and hatred towards MEC Officials, Government and DPP so much that any DPP win will not be accepted by the opposition and their supporters. This is very dangerous to the Country and can lead to a civil war or civil misunderstanding, the Security organisations should take this seriously, they should ask MCP/UTM to give leads to their findings.     2. Idiot Saunders! There is no speculation in this. The DPP is ferrying under age children to be registered by NRB with the aim of broadening its voter base. This is being done in the districts of Mwanza, Phalombe, Mangochi, Mulanje, Thyolo and several other areas in the Southern Region. In fact in Mwanza Mozambicans have also been known to register, a criminal offence! The DPP is also illegally confiscating IDs from people in rural areas on the pretext that they will be offered loans but the main aim is to disenfranchise the people, believed to be MCP/UTM supporters. Several people caught in this malpractice have confessed they were sent by the DPP. What proof do you need? This is a clear recipe for unrest in the country and it is clear that the DPP leadership is desperately doing all it can to stay in power is not interested in the welfare of Malawians but in their own. Most of these DPP have skeletons in their cupboards which are hidden and protected as long as the current president is in the driving seat and do not want regime change. But sooner or later change will come and someone new will be in the driving seat. DPP may delay the change but cannot stop it. The MCP/UTM kokoliko group is spot on and should not relent in their efforts to detect the underhand tactics being used by DPP to steal an election.

For sure what judgement do they have in possession because the court has never at any single sentence pointed that the evidence that was brought to court substantiated any rigging that was alleged.
