Angry people on Monday forced police at Thabwa (road heading to Nsanje Lalanje) to remove the seal tape from the number plate of a suspicious car driven by ruling Democractic Progressive Party (DPP) official in an operation to garner votes fraudulently for Nsanje Lalanje by-election.
The car belongs to Blantyre City Council registration number BQ 8522.
Three candidates—Gladys Ganda of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lawrence Sitolo of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and an independent candidate Winnie Wakudyanaye—are contesting in Nsanje Lalanje.
MCP’s Shaban Dinyero a monitor for Sitolo said their party monitors have told the, DPP operatives are using parastatal vehicles without number plates moving around polling centers for sinister moves.
“We will remain vigilant to frustrate electoral Fraud,” he said.
He said at Chilimba school polling center Toyota Hilux metallic with registration number plates hidden has been visiting the place and passengers in it talking to only DPP monitors.
The DPP officials seem to also connecting with Headteacher Mr Nkhata and his deputy Mrs Kansaira.
In Phokera primary school polling centre there is no lock on the door to where electoral materials are being kept, monitors said.
People of Nsanje Lalanje, which has 13 polling centres, are voting following the death in May of Sam Ganda (DPP) and the battle is primarily between Sitolo and Ganda (the late Sam Ganda’s widow).
Besides Nsanje Lalanje, MEC is also holding by-elections in Lilongwe City South East and Lilongwe Msozi South. There will also be Local Government by-elections in Mayani North Ward in Dedza North Constituency, Mtsiliza Ward in Lilongwe City West Constituency and Ndirande Makata Ward in Blantyre Malabada Constituency.
