MEC says to hold Lilongwe south by-election with Balaka councillor poll

Pollster, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will hold the Lilongwe south constituency by-election along with a local government poll in Balaka.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa: Cost effective

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the Lilongwe south constituency and Liwaladzi ward in Balaka north constituency by-elections would be held together to save money, resources and time.

“We feel this arrangement is cost effective,” said Mwafulirwa.

On Wednesday, MEC said it will this week announce the date for the by-election in Lilongwe south which was postponed due to political violence.

MEC chief executive officer Sam Alufandika said this follows a series of meetings the pollster held with political parties on the need for peaceful election.

“We will have the campaign period of less than five days because this is the continuation of the previous campaign,” he said.

The November 5 by-election in the area was postponed because of political violence and threats to lives of staff and commissioners of MEC.
