MEC to redemarcate constituencies November 5 after by-elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it will embark on redemarcation exercise for some constituencies after the November 5 by-elections.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the pollster to redemarcate constituencies

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa says the pollster decided to embark on the exercise after the by-elections because, he said, this was a major assignment.

“There is need to redemarcate some of the constituencies because some of them are very big while others are very small. Some have 100, 000 voters whilst others have less than 10, 000 voters,” said Mwafulirwa.

The exercise however can be highly political as increasing or decreasing the number of constituencies in regions is sensitive taking into account some of the major political parties have regional strongholds.

Analyst George Phiri has warned MEC to tread carefully when redemarcating the constituencies.

This has been long overdue for some constituencies. For example, Rumphi West Constituency stretches from Lunyina (close to Rumphi Boma) all the way to the boarder with Zambia in Hewe, a distance of about 70km (east to west), and from Chilinda on Nyika Plataue to Kazuni, a distance of about 80 Km or more (north to south). Rumphi West Constituency can be even divided into three constituencies. The exercise should not just end with the demarcation of the constituencies. Even more important is the re-demarcation of the Regions. The boundary for Northern Region should be Lusa River in Kasungu and… Read more »

This i s the time we were waiting for to reduce the the number of MPS to 70 or 90 like what happened with Wards to reduce the Tax burden on the poor on feeding these people. With technology such as GIS these days one can easily monitor what is lacking in their areas.

The redemarcation exercise of constituencies is long over due in some districts. Looking at the intensive work that was conducted in the southern region in the name of redesigning the districts plus adding some more districts. This was politically designed to raise the numerical power of the Southerners in parliament. The creation of Likoma was simply to show off that Bakili was rewarding George Nga Mtafu as a staunch UDF functionary. The social and health services are below the bar.

Sometimes argue with facts and not opinions. Original Mwanza/ Neno district had 4 constituencies and now have two apiece. Machinga/ Balaka had 11 and were split to 7/4 while Mulanje/Phalombe had 14 and split to 9/5, was there any gain? And in fact if we have to be fair we have to reduce the number of constituencies in the North. At 33 out of 193 they represent 17% which is higher than the percentage of its population! By the way in the process of redemarcation consider almagamation of constituencies to reduce them to below 120. Our country is small both… Read more »
