Michiru Madrid bow out of Carlsberg Cup

Resilient Blantyre based second tier league side, Michiru Madrid, are out of the Carlsberg Cup after being walloped 4 nil by giants, Moyale Barracks, in a quarter final match played at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday.

The Lions of Kaning’ina were serious minded from the word go.

Just 20 seconds into the game, Chamveka Gwetsani’s powerful shot was fumbled by goalkeeper Hastings Chavula of Michiru Madrid for a corner which paid no dividends for the Mzuzu based soldiers.

A well taken corner kick in the 25th minute by Clifford Fukizi found Deus Mkutu in the danger zone and his header ended into Madrid’s net.

Fukizi registered his name on the score sheet in the 32nd minute when he easily tapped into the net a beautiful cross from the right. 2 nil.

Six minutes later, Khuda Muyaba’s thunderous shot from inside the 18 metre box resulted in goalkeeper Hastings Chavula collecting the ball from his net. It was 3 nil at half time in favour of the Lions of Kaning’ina.

In the second half, the visitors continued expressing themselves on the ball beautifully despite trailing but they were so wasteful in front of goal. Goalkeeper Macdonald Harawa’s reflexes also denied them any single reduction of the score line.

It was the towering Boyboy Chima who hammered the last nail on Madrid’s coffin in the 69th minute when he tapped in a well curved Chamveka Gwetsani cross from the right.

After 90 minutes and added time, it was Moyale Barracks 4 and Michiru Madrid nil.

Speaking to Nyasa Times after the match, Michiru Madrid coach, Cyrus Luwindo, said he could not blame anyone for the loss but congratulated Moyale Barracks for making it to the semis.

“We made some mistakes but my boys enjoyed their game. You could see them playing the ball on the ground unlike our opponents who were simply kicking and rushing for high and long balls. We have learnt a lot from this tournament. We hope do to better in our league in the Southern Region because we have only played nine games,” explained Luwindo.

Team Manager for Moyale Barracks, Lieutenant Gerald Kanje, said the game was not easy considering the fact that Madrid came hard into the game after eliminating two super league sides.

“We didn’t play our usual passing game but what mattered is the result because this was a cup game. We desperately need to clinch this cup after failing reach the finals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup and so I can promise our fans that we will work hard this time around to become champions of the Carlsberg Cup,” retorted Lieutenant Kanje.
