Minister Nankhumwa calls for respect for all national leaders, past and present

Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has called upon Members of Parliament (MPs) and all Malawians to respect all national leaders, past and present, in recognition of the various roles they played or are playing to develop the Malawi nation.

Malawi leaders past and present: Late Bingu (L), Banda (C) and Mutharika

He was speaking at the end of the 2017/2018 national budget parliamentary session in Lilongwe on Friday, 2017.

Nankhumwa, who is also MP for Mulanje central and Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, observed in his speech that since independence from colonialism 52 years ago, Malawi has experienced different types of leadership.

“Each leadership came with its own style and focus. We had Kamuzu Banda through Dr. Bakili Muluzi, Professor Bingu wa Mutharika and Dr. Joyce Banda. These leaders contributed to this country in their own unique way, and they also had their own shortfalls.

“As they say the past is there to learn from, we all need to recognize and learn from this reality as we search for practical solutions to move this country forward on a path to socioeconomic emancipation” he said.

The Leader of Government Business now the nation has a leadership which is marshalled by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, “who was democratically elected based on the cardinal tenets of our constitutionalism”.

“Like all leaders before him, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is also not the ‘almighty’. As much as he is doing his best to focus on the job that Malawians elected him for, he will still be prone to human imperfections at some point.

“It is, however, important, Mr. Speaker Sir, that he is accorded the level of respect equivalent to his office. In fact, respect ought to be an integral part of the governing framework within which this country’s leadership must operate,” he said.

In his speech, he thanked President Mutharika, “for recognizing me with the honor of being Leader of Government Business in this august house”.

“With due humility, I wish to assure His Excellency of my un-flinching dedication and resolve to be his humble servant in our common and relentless quest to find governance solutions and to consolidate democracy in Malawi

“I would also like to thank you, Mr. Speaker Sir, and all Honorable members on both sides of the isle in this august house for your support during the short period that I have served as Leader of Government Business,” he said.

Nankhumwa assured fellow MPs that his‘calling’ is no more than theirs, which is to pursue common political spaces with responsibility and purpose, in the interest of common aspirations of their respective constituents, the ones they represent.

“I wish to reiterate that we have a huge responsibility as Parliament to serve the burning expectations of Malawians. As Leader of Government Business in this august house, I will ensure to work closely with the leadership of all political parties represented in this august so that we implement the will of the people and improve their lives for the better,” said Nankhumwa.

  3. Kondwani, that’s the way leaders speak, you make us citizens to be proud to be Malawians. But please tell the President that there is only one reason most Malawians hate DPP and APM: nepotism and tribalism. Tell the president to stop these vices. When you hate certain types of people they also hate you back. It’s a basic fact of nature .
