A total of 8 Malawian girls will on June 23 compete for a beauty pageant dubbed Miss Malawi Ireland which will be held at Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley in Dublin.
Event organisers said they have also invited Malawian music icon, Lucius Banda, to perform at the show.
“This is the first ever Miss Malawi Ireland [as] the Malawian community is growing so fast with number of students coming to study,” the organisers told Nyasa Times.
“Our theme is to bring together solidarity within our community and to recognise how vulnerable valuable people of Malawi are after the community suffered with two murder cases of students,” the organisers said.
They were referring to this year’s murder of Rudo Mawere whose body was found in a suitcase and Paiche Unyolo, whose headless body was discovered wrapped in plastic bags in 2004.
The event organisers named the contestants as: Betina Khozi, Atupele Mondiwa, Jacque Konyani, Tina Maunde, Evelyn Suwedi, Denise Anthony, Prema Tewetsa and Nunu Nsidwa Kambauwa.
The organisers include, Grace Matsuka, Clara Chiro, Quent Katoleza, Jubheda Chande Alinane Harawa, and Briston Chilunjika.
Prizes worth 1,000 Euros would be won.
The organiser intended to make Miss Malawi Ireland an annual event.
